[opensuse] Empty dialog boxes in some applications
![](https://seccdn.libravatar.org/avatar/5a1ff996671b3bbad16acab9a1723a8b.jpg?s=120&d=mm&r=g)
I am running the eclipse IDE recently downloaded and when I hover my mouse over an icon, instead of getting text in a box describing what the icon is for, I get an empty box. I reported this over on the eclipse user forum and they wanted a recording of what I was doing so they could see. Si I installed xvidcap from packman to get a recording and I noticed that the xvidcap program did the same thing. Emtpy dialog boxes when I hover over an icon. So I now suspect this may be a SuSE problem. I've only done this on leap 42.3. Anyone else ever see this and know a possible solution? I think possibly you are looking in the wrong place. Not the OS. Usually controlled by your desktop (which you haven't identified) and likely something like you have the font/color of the text set to the same color as the background, like white on white or black on black, and thus it's "invisible". Well xvidcap has no settings for this. Eclipse has it set for black on white. I'm running KDE. I have not configured either of these 2 pgms for such and am using defaults. I doubt the defaults would be white on white? Regards Mark -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Someone running KDE would have to tell you where the settings are (qt?). I could possibly help you only with XFCE or LXDE(gtk) desktops which is all I know. If you happen to have another/alternative desktop installed (xfce, lxde, gnome, whatever), do you have the same problem when running inside that other desktop? If that's a question then I don't know ;-) If that's a statement then you've just identified that it's a desktop / KDE settings problem. I've added "KDE:" to your post title. I just installed these two GTK apps on my 13.2 x86_64 machine and all is well. I think you are looking in the wrong place. This should be a qt thing and not a gtk. See if you have something called "Qt Configuration" in your menus or, if not, try "qtconfig" in a terminal. If it runs (it's a qt4 gui) let me know and I'll tell you what to change to try to affect the tooltip colors. NOTE! don't play with settings in that gui without writing down first what they were before as many of them take effect immediately without asking for confirmation. If it doesn't run then a KDE user will need to tell you where the qt base settings for tooltips are in KDE. Surely someone knows. I have qtconfig and it runs. Also I have something in Settings->ConfigureDesktop->Appearance->ApplicationStyle->GnomeApplicationStyle. It has settings for GTK2/3 Themes and Behavior, and Icon and cursor Theme.
Try qtconfig and see if it helps any: In the Appearance tab click on Tune Palette. It should say Active Palette at the top right of the next window, if not change it to Active Palette. Under Central Color Roles, change the drop-down box from what it is set as, probably Window, to ToolTipBase. Note what color is shown in the Set Color box. Now change the drop-down box from ToolTipBase to ToolTipText. What color is now shown in the Set Color Box? If both Base and Text are the same then you'll want to change one or the other of them. I use black text on yellow background but try whatever you want. OK, and then File -> Save. See if that does anything to your tooltips. Thanks but that was back in 2012. A lot has changed since then. In fact on my SuSE 13.2 system I do NOT have this issue at all. Plasma5/Leap bug me thinks. Mark -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

In every case where they worked, the boxes were black with white text. In every case where they were empty, the boxes were white. Maybe the text was also white as "listreader" suggested. How to make this right?
I think you are looking in the wrong place. This should be a qt thing and not a gtk. See if you have something called "Qt Configuration" in your menus or, if not, try "qtconfig" in a terminal. If it runs (it's a qt4 gui) let me know and I'll tell you what to change to try to affect the tooltip colors. NOTE! don't play with settings in that gui without writing down first what they were before as many of them take effect immediately without asking for confirmation.
Thanks for this info. However the box shown to "Build Palette", no "Tune", is grey'd out and says "Please use the KDE Control Center to set the Palette". I assume that the "KDE Control Center" is now Settings->ConfigureDesktop as I referenced above. I've looked all around in there for Palette anything and see nothing there. When I go to colors, the scheme is Breeze. I select Edit Scheme. I get a window labeled "Breeze -- System Settings". I click on colors and I see "Color Set: Common colors" In there I see tooltip background is black and tooltip text is white. This is how I see the boxes when it works properly. I reversed them to see if the pgms that do work would change to black text on white background. They did not change. So I don't think this is affecting GTK apps. Even though the "Apply Colors to non-QT applications" button is checked. When I select "Color Set: Tooltip" I see colors for normal background alternative backgrounds normal text Inactive text Active text Link text Visited text Negative text Neutral text Positive text They are all different colors. I'm lost. It must be a bug? Mark -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It is "some gtk tools when used in kde". So you need to find a setup app for gtk inside kde. For instance, are those tools that fail gtk2 or 3? I think possibly you are looking in the wrong place. Not the OS. Usually controlled by your desktop (which you haven't identified) and likely something like you have the font/color of the text set to the same color as the background, like white on white or black on black, and thus it's "invisible".
Well xvidcap has no settings for this. Eclipse has it set for black on white. I'm running KDE. I have not configured either of these 2 pgms for such and am using defaults. I doubt the defaults would be white on white?
Someone running KDE would have to tell you where the settings are (qt?). I could possibly help you only with XFCE or LXDE(gtk) desktops which is all I know.
If you happen to have another/alternative desktop installed (xfce, lxde, gnome, whatever), do you have the same problem when running inside that other desktop?
Both xvidcap and eclipse have text in the boxes when using gnome? If that's a question then I don't know ;-) If that's a statement then you've just identified that it's a desktop / KDE settings problem.
It was a statement. Sorry.
I've added "KDE:" to your post title. Maybe someone using KDE will now notice it and hopefully jump in to help.
The 2 apps in question are GTK based. Don't know if that really makes any difference. Maybe it's a GTK thing?
I had similar experience with gtk2 applications in KDE3. Some menu items and dialogs were blank. I solved it by changing gtk theme (for example from crux theme to clearlooks theme in my case). I remembered it from when it was submitted a year ago and I have a copy in my home repo. I just looked at the Pacman package and it looks unmaintained for a long time. If the multimedia:apps version works it would indicate a bug in eclipse otherwise I would assume that you have a gtk2 configuration problem maybe the theme. Mplabx is a self contained static linked third party package. Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Maybe this is a case of incompatible utilities simultaneously installed. Is this happening in a Plasma session. If it is, the opensuse-kde list is more likely to get a definitive answer sooner. I got a resolution over on the opensuse-kde list from someone named Daniele. I though I would share since you all were so kind to try to help me. It was too simple. Settings->Colors, then uncheck the ""Apply colors to non QT Apps" box. All is good now.
