Hi Everyone. Anybody got a good MP3 player working under 6.3? Advice? KMp3 any good or are there better? mpg123 is good, command line mp3 player. xmms (formly Xamp) is a good GUI mp3 player. Both are (IMHO) equal to kmp3. Jack ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve's Linux <fsanta@arrakis.es> To: <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Sent: Friday, January 14, 2000 1:51 PM Subject: [SLE] MP3 Linux stuff

My personal favorite is xmms, found at freshmeat.net or their home page, xmms.org. It works great under oss. Now if I can only get alsa to work correctly. :) Justin On Fri, 14 Jan 2000, Steve's Linux wrote:

Ok, now on my home system, a 6.3 SuSE workstation, alsa works just fine ? As well as xmms, xmcd, l3enc, etc. What is the problem when you try to run alsa ? -Dee W.D.McKinney (Dee) deem@wdm.com "No claim to fame, just saved by Grace." -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Well, alsa seems to load just find and dandy, but when I try to run xmms, it has a pop up window that says: No soundcards found. I can run mixers, and my microphone works. Also, when I ran alsaconf, it autodetected the card, and then played a sound. Seemed to work. But now xmms, mpg123, wav players and stuff don't seem to be working. If you need additional information, just ask. I should probably include that I had oss installed also. On Fri, 14 Jan 2000, Justin Bauer wrote:

Ok, well, I'm having problems again(surprise :) ). I thought I had alsa working, but did not. I can't run xmms or mpg123 or a wav player. But my microphone works...weird. I have a SB PCI128. This is a little long, so bear with me. Here's what happened: I installed alsa without problems. I ran alsaconf, and used the es1370 chipset, and it played a pretty sound. I SCREWED something up. This is what I get now. *root@darkman:~ > lsmod *Module Size Used by *root@darkman:~ > I ran alsaconf and configured the same chipset I did before: and got this error message: *Loading driver: Starting sound driver: modprobe: Nothing to load ??? *Specify at least a module or a wildcard like \* * done *alsactl: The soundcard 'CARD_1' was not found... * *alsactl: The soundcard 'CARD_1' was not found... * *Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50% The *ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system. Could not initialize *the mixer, the card was probably not detected correctly. *root@darkman:~ > then I do a lsmod: *root@darkman:~ > lsmod *Module Size Used by *snd 33772 0 (autoclean) *soundcore 2596 0 (autoclean) [snd] *root@darkman:~ > When I remove these modules and load the card itself, this happens: *root@darkman:~ > modprobe snd-card-ens1370 *root@darkman:~ > lsmod *Module Size Used by *snd-card-ens1370 2428 0 (unused) *snd-ens1370 6028 0 [snd-card-ens1370] *snd-pcm1 17084 0 [snd-ens1370] *snd-timer 7612 0 [snd-pcm1] *snd-midi 12172 0 [snd-card-ens1370 snd-ens1370] *snd-ak4531-codec 14380 0 [snd-ens1370] *snd-mixer 25824 0 [snd-card-ens1370 snd-ens1370 *snd-ak4531-codec] *snd-pcm 8620 0 [snd-card-ens1370 snd-pcm1] *snd 33772 1 [snd-card-ens1370 snd-ens1370 snd-pcm1 * snd-timer snd-midi snd-ak4531-codec snd-mixer snd-pcm] *soundcore 2596 2 [snd] *root@darkman:~ > Now I can run kmix, or my choice of mixers, and my microphone works, but xmms, mpg123 and wavplayers don't. Not even kde system sounds. I had oss installed and that might be screwing things up, but I'm not sure. If I had oss, then changed to alsa, do the programs still point to oss? If so, where do I fix this? Please help. You all should try to use the remote control to xmms that uses k-jofol skins. It's way cooler than any other skin you can add to xmms. You don't need to recompile xmms to use it, as is stated in its web site. Just download the sources from http://www.dgs.monash.edu.au/~timf/xmms/ Remember to edit the makefile, do a 'make' to build it as a remote control (without the analyser) or `make clean; make vislib' to build as a plug-in. -- Rafael Herrera -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
mp3blaster is a great player for the console. It has powerful play list capability and a built in mixer. xmms is the best for GUI. Jackson Steve's Linux wrote:

XMMS is by far the best mp3 player for Linux/Unix or as far as I am concerned it is. It has cool plugins, supports Winamp skins and much more. There is an RPM of it on the SuSE 6.3 cd's or you can download it from xmms.org. Give it a try, I think you will like it. laters, -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -------------------- "Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom" --Gen. xmms and gqmpeg (sic?) compile and run just fine on 6.3. I had problems with freempeg though. -- Rachel -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
