Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000
Hello all, I received the mentioned camera from my on-line school for a public speaking class. It is a USB webcam, and rated for Windows. I obviously prefer not to go that route, and would like to see this work in Linux. I searched around and found: http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/ which claims limited usage of the camera, but it looks like the video will work and that is what I am after. It appears that the only way to get the source is through an svn connection (I've never had the need, don't have any experience there) or with 'copy-and-paste' from a web page. I'm willing to give it a go and see what happens (tomorrow or the next day), but thought I would ask if anyone here has got one of these webcams to work and if so, how? The pwc/pwcx site says it does not support this model. I am currently running Suse 9.3 on an IBM R31 laptop. USB is 1 (not 2), but I doubt that would create a problem. Any experiences? - James W.

Plug it in and see what lsusb returns for it, plug the manufacturer and model into a google/linux search. I'm using a quickcam with the qc-usb driver not the pwc driver. In my case lsusb (as root): inux:/home/Mike/.mozilla # lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:08f0 Logitech, Inc. Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:c401 Logitech, Inc. TrackMan Marble Wheel Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0409:0058 NEC Corp. HighSpeed Hub Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Vendor ID 0x46d Product ID 0x8f0 I remember that there's a page of webcams listed by those numbers that shows which driver you need.

046d:08c5 Logitech, Inc. I downloaded the driver, the auto-install script failed, so I plan on finding some time to fiddle with that. It appears that this will work once I can get the driver to install. Thanks again! - James W.
