dos / Linux networking....
Hi all.. I know I've asked this before but I've still not figured it out. What the deal is my wife has an old 386 running M$ DOS 5.00. I added a NE2000 clone NIC card. What I need to do is fix it where she can transfer files between her system (Emil) and my main system (Tenn). She does not have Windows or Linux on her system. I would like to set it up where she could mount my system to her's as her D: dir and then use Norton Commander to transfer files. She will not allow me to put Windows or Linux on her system. Any simple ideas for me? Well, my first thought she should at least dump M$ DOS and let you install FreeDOS (freedos.org). But while looking at that page there is a link to networking DOS, with a link to this (http://www.helmig.com/j_helmig/Doscltcp.htm) page. Hi Jim, I suggest you have a look at MS-DOS / NCSA Telnet TCP/IP package located at: http://www.simtel.net/pub/msdos/ncsatlnt/ I use to use it for telnet functions between MS-DOS and some old versions of UNIX 386 and it worked well. I think it has an FTP client in the package but not sure how well it works (my memory is not that good). THere is another package called Waterloo University TCP/IP - wattcp, which can be located at the same place. It is an early TCP/IP stack - I have never used it, from memory I had problems getting it to work. This maybe worth checking out if the other package does not meet your needs. I don't know of any nfs type clients for DOS but maybe worth doing a search on http://www.simtel.net/ Also have a look at FreeDOS Networking it has a number of links for Dos networking. http://www.drdos.org/ Wisk you luck. If you have installed the ethernet card corectly it should have installed the microsoft net functions. This should allow you to use the net commands to map your network drive to the D: drive like you requested. I've noticed that every meaningful reply to this message has suggested using SAMBA on the server side and TCP/IP on th client side. Has anyone considered using Novell/IPX, which has lower overhead for the client and similar performance? I can't help much, but that's the direction I'd lean towards. Alternatively, as mentioned in the Backup with MS-DOS HOWTO, "an MS-DOS machine need not always be an MS-DOS machine." HI all... I got it up and running! I used the M$ software on her machine and Samba on mine. Now my /cdisk looks like her "D:" dir on her 386. Now she's after me to put email (Pine) and lynx on her system. Oh well back to the salt mines.... You should write an article or something. Seriously. I'm not kidding. A page or two giving the broad strokes of how you got a 6-year-old laptop to participate in a network using free software.

Cygwin works better, but you need at least 95 or NT4 to use that, neither of which will run very smartly on that laptop. May I also offer Mutt and Links as suitable replacements? Each of these has "compatibility modes" witht the programs you mentioned, and are IMHO vastly superior. I'm sure there's a Mutt port for MS CLI environments, but I'm not sure about links...perhaps w3m?

I'm working on that. In a day or two I'll put up on the list what I did. BTW her system is not the laptop. She has an Compaq Deskpro 386/25e. It was made sometime around 1992 or so. It has 4mb of main memory and 120mb HD. She only "upgraded" to that about a year ago after she wore out my 1987 XT.
Now she's after me to put email (Pine) and lynx on her system. Oh well back to the salt mines....
