[opensuse] How to shut down ?
Hello, This seems a silly question but I can't shutdown/reboot in KDE. I'm using Suse 11.2 64bit, with all updates. Due to sound-problems I had to install Gnome and afterwards I added KDE. When I log into Gnome, I have a possibility to shutdown the machine, besides switching to another user and restarting the computer. So this is OK. When I log into KDE, all I can do is log out of KDE, there are no other choices. In the login-screen there are possibilities to shutdown or restart the PC. What do I have to install to be able to shutdown the PC from within KDE ? Related maybe : if I try to start a new session from within KDE, nothing happens, the screen turns black. If I move the mouse or press a key, I get a prompt (small window) to give the password of the original session's user. Then I'm back in the original session. What's happening ? Now I remember that I never tried this in Gnome. Thanks for any info. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Have you applied all the updates recently? There was a bug report on this problem and a fix was issued. If you're still experiencing problems add to this bug report. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=578222 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I turned in the original bug report but have not seen the kernel update yet. Did you find it some where? I just installed the latest up date available for 11.2 an hour ago and did not see one for this problem. Can you post the repo you found it in. Hi Andrew, I read the bugreport, but it's not what I experience. When I log into Gnome, all is fine : I can reboot/shutdown my machine from there. When I log into KDE, I only can logout. Once I'm logged out I can reboot/shutdown my machine. I think I'm missing something in KDE. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello, did You try to go to KDE Control Center | System | Login manager? There are possibilities who can shut down the computer. It should be set to root only for remote access and everybody for local login. Hello Vojtěch, I checked in the KDE control-center, and everybody can shutdown the computer. Still I only can logout of KDE. Maybe a clue : I have a test-user (plain user created to test if old configurations of normal users were causing problems). In the KDE-control center I disabeled the display of this user in the logon screen. Still it's displayed in the logon screen. This made me thinking. Those login-screens seem to be specific to display-managers : KDM for KDE and GDM for Gnome. Maybe there's a problem, since I first installed Gnome ? -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello, KDE Control center controls only KDM, not GDM. You might try to switch from GDM to KDM. Go to YaST | System | Editor of /etc/sysconfig files | Desktop | Display manager. There You can choose DM You wish as well as You can config the general settings - it should IMHO work for all DMs. If this does not help, then I do not know... :-) Best regards! -- Vojtěch Zeisek Komunita openSUSE GNU/Linuxu / Community of the openSUSE GNU/Linux http://www.opensuse.org/ http://web.natur.cuni.cz/~zeisek/

Hi Vojtěch, It's working now. I modified the display manager to KDM. Thanks. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Change your Display Manager (e/tc/sysconfig editor in Yast, IIRC) from GDM to KDM3/4 if you use KDE as your default DE and GDM for GNOME. It seems this is not distro-specific: it's the same in Ubuntu and Fedora as well- there is no 'Shutdown' option in KDE if you use GDM and vice-versa, shutdown has to be done through the other Display Manager.
