[SuSE Linux] AHA2940 Ultra SCSI- Timeout Errors.....
I have my root partition on a 4gb scsi hd attached to an Adaptec AHA2940 Ultra. On the card I have 2 such scsi hard disks and a cd-r drive- All works without any errors in windows 95. I Frequently get timeout errors when accessing the hard disk. The SCSI bus is then reset after a while of unresponsiveness. I checked the support database but did not see anything specific regarding this adapter- I changed the transfer rate down to 10 meg but that didn't seem to help. The curious part about it is when I was installing the OS I wasn't getting the error- It only happened once I rebooted the box after the installation. The installation program found all the scsi devices without any problems. Any ideas? - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Without _any_ information about the kernel and driver versions it is essentially impossible to help. Try a new kernel with a new driver (2.0.36). If the problem persists, check termination and cabling. -o) Hubert Mantel Goodbye, dots... /\\ _\_v - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
I have a AHA2940UW and recently had problems being able to read a mounted FAT16 partition. Reads were successful at the initial install but on subsequent reboots, reads would fail with what appeared to be SCSI timeouts and resets. I'd used SuSE 5.3 supplied kernels with different flavors of the aic7XXX driver but with no noticeable change in behavior. In the end I merely built the kernel from SuSE source and have had no problem since then. The only known significant changes to my kernel configuration were enabling SMP and sound support. If you search the web you'll find several sites dealing with Linux SCSI, unfortunately I don't have the URLs with me now but they shouldn't be too hard to track down. Lance
