installing 8.1 and aic7xxx
Trying to install version 8.1 pro from CD on a dual pentium450 scsi machine, start of installation hangs on initializing aic7xxx (says lsmod in tty2). After some time (a half hour) yast says, that there is no harddisk. Well, there are 2 disks in the machine.. Looking on textconsoles gives: Oct 26 13:25:43 (none) modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-6 Does this have to do something with it? Already restarted install with safe settings, but so far to no avail. How can I install 8.1?? TIA Leen

My fault, silly :-( But after checking these mails I still do not have a solution, other maybe than to build a new kernel from sources of kernel.org? That should have to be done on another machine then, and I do not have it at hand at the moment. Not a quick solution for today then, but could someone from Suse look into this, and maybe solve it in a new bootdisk image?? Now my brandnew 8.1 pro set of disks (bought this afternoon) is not working, and so worthless :-( I do not intend to get RH on this machine, being a SuSE fan for so long now (started with 5.3).

Try to install in manual mode and choose the older version of the aic7xxx driver (IIRC, it's aic7xxx_old or something similar). Philipp -- Philipp Thomas work: pthomas@suse.de Development SuSE Linux AG private: pth@t-link.de

Yes I already tried that (first thing in fact), does not help. I have downloaded kernel sources on my own machine at home, and I plan to bake a new kernel tomorrow. Install will be later this week, see what that gets us. For now: I am going to relax for my saturday evening....
