RE: Re: [SLE] Remote Administration of Dialup Box for My Sister
Ok, Martin. I'll try it. I was under the impression it was a windoze
product and didn't even want to look at it. Could you provide the
url so that I can get it. I plan to as complete as possible build the
linux box in my "lab" (basement junk area :-) ) and then take it to
her location and then start tweaking/installing everything.
Regards,
Keith B.
BTW, is Smoothwall installed in place of SuSE or along with/on top of
SuSE?

But since she lives so far away, I would like to know and

I have done it using "OpenSSH". If ran the SSH daemon on startup, (from your sister's router/gateway), then you would then be able to SSH into her machine.
Note: in order for this to work, you'll have to have SSH running on YOUR box as well.
You will also have to make sure that your sister's linux box has a fully qualified hostname (FQHN) which can be recognised externally.
If you need anymore information, let me know,
You could use one of the free dynamic DNS services as a work-around to this problem. Again, a Smoothie will sort this out for you.

The site is http://www.smoothwall.org/gpl/. Download the ISO image of 0.99
and create a CD-ROM (plus boot floppy if you can't boot CDs on the PC).
Smoothwall is a complete (but thinned down) Linux distribution and cannot
reside with any other OS. It will destroy all data on the first physical hard
disk!
I suggest you download and read the documentation before you begin albeit the
RedHat style setup program is easy to follow. Once the systems is installed
you can configure everything through a Web interface.
