Website won't stay open with Mozilla. Where to begin looking for a fix?
I'm using SuSE 9.1 pro and Mozilla 1.6. For months I have had no problems. Then about 2 weeks ago I started having problems with one website. Other than regular updates using the Yast2 on-line update feature and RedCarpet (KDE and Pacman updates only), I have not made any changes. To the best of my knowledge I have not changed any settings. When I go to this site -----> http://www.optiboard.com/forums/ my browser calls up the home page. No problem. Then when I click on any of the discussion forums (for example, "General Discussion Forum"), that page opens without problems. Then.... If I click on any discussion thread within that forum (or on ANY discussion thread in ANY other forum on this website), the page opens to the thread but then Mozilla immediately closes. This is the only website where I am having this problem. I don't have any idea where to begin looking for a fix. I have contacted the webmaster but he is a Windows person and can provide no assistance. Any ideas, gurus? Thanks! Gil

Uhm, you might want to try a different browser. Try e.g. Opera, or Konqueror, and see if they can handle this. If they can't, it's maybe a problem on the website; if they can, it's maybe a problem with Mozilla. I'm not sure if Firefox can handle this, because it is based on Gecko too. Cheers, Leen

Leen, just checked and the website works fine with Konqueror. So it does seem to be a problem with this version of Mozilla. Thanks! Gil

They could try cleaning up the html on their site, which isn't valid. The best way I've found to do this is to use the World Wide Web Consortium validator at http://validator.w3.org. If you do that with their page, you'll see a vast slew of errors. The web is awash with broken html/xhtml, much of it produced by Front Page, I suspect. See if the folks at that site are prepared to do the decent thing and produce standards compliant pages, if not, tell them that's the reason you're stopping using the site. A quick glance at the site in the version of Internet Explorer the webmaster happens to have on his machine is often all the checking the code gets, but it's important to conform to the standards for interoperability, and particularly to provide consistent results for users with disabilities, visual impairments and so on. can you please post the version of mozilla RPM? I fear that this crash is our fault. The last security fixed package provided for 9.1 has an error. IIRC this is the broken version. Since today there should be a new online update available for mozilla on 9.1. This is fixed again. If you would like to check this out? You might also look at your plugins directory. I've had some big ol' stability problems with Firefox and Mozilla (over several versions) due to - I think - the java plugin. Simply renaming the plugins dir to "plugins.bak" made stuff more stable, but at the expense of plugin related features not working. :) Anyway, you might check to see if there are newer versions of things like flash and the java plugin you're using, among others. Or it might just be that you got one of the bum versions. --Danny, just giving something else to check

I cannot reproduce this behavior. I did recently switch from the "stock" Mozilla 1.7.3 build for GTK1 to a GTK2-based build. So the problem could have been fixed subsequent to Mozilla 1.6 or it could be something more subtle that's related to the build configuration. Any ideas, gurus?
Upgrade to a current build of Mozilla! 1.7.3 is better (faster, less buggy, more featureful and just as inexpensive).
Thanks! Gil
