SuSE 9.1 "live CD" won't install :o(
Hi, everyone. Strange problem here. Hope someone can help. I am running SuSE 9.0 on an e-Machine (2.8 Ghz Celeron, 512 MB memory). No problems. However, when I try to run the SuSE 9.1 "live CD" to evaluate this newest version of SuSE I can't get the program to install. The CD starts up, and after pressing F2 I can read the various lines scrolling on screen as the CD loads. But it gets to a line that says "Starting PCMCIA" and then it hangs. It absolutely will not go past this "Starting PCMCIA" line. I've tried multiple times. I have to do the 3-finger salute (control/alt/delete) to get the machine to reboot. As it shuts down I again can read the lines after pressing F2. Here I see one particularly interesting line, though I don't know if it is relevent to the problem. The line says "Shutting down PCMCIA fatal Module yenta_socket in use" Yenta_socket???? What is that? Tech support at e-Machines had no idea. For reasons I don't understand SuSE seems to think there is a PCMCIA card in this desktop computer. There is not. Neither is there a wireless card. But something is tricking SuSE into thinking there is PCMCIA on this computer, and SuSE just gets hopelessly hung at that point. I am using an original SuSE "live CD," not a disk downloaded from the Internet. In addition, the "live CD" has successfully run on three other SuSE 9.0 boxes here including a 400Mhz Celeron (a real oldie). I called e-Machines and they could not help ("We don't support Linux, only Windows."). :o( I also was advised by SuSE (San Francisco) to try typing "nopcmcia=1" as the boot option at start up. That did not help. I also tried this in "safe" mode. That also did not help. In both cases SuSE still hung at "Starting PCMCIA." Any ideas why my e-Machine won't load the "live CD"? I am concerned that if it won't load this "test" version of 9.1 then I might have problems once I decide to upgrade to 9.1 using the 9.1 professional disks. Your thoughts and guidance are greatly appreciated. ;o) Gil

A yenta is a match maker. And if you want to stick your little thingy into the little hole, such a thing is needed, no? :) Specifically, it's a driver for several types of PCMCIA cards. One table that shows what it handles is at http://www-oss.fnal.gov/projects/fermilinux/731/pcmciatable.html

Did you try "NOHOTPLUG=1"?

Anders, thanks for reply. Unfortunately "nohotplug=1" did not help in either regular or "safe" mode. Still hangs at "Starting PCMCIA." However, this time I observed an additional item in both cases (I don't know if this was there previously or if it's only now appeared with the new "nohotplug=1" boot option). The shutdown line I just noticed says "Module PCMCIA core is in use." And as for yenta=match-maker. ;o) Wife and I are rolling on the floor laughing. Even in Scandanavia you have yentas??? ;o) Gil

From looking at the hotplug script, it looks like case is important, so try "NOHOTPLUG=1" instead of "nohotplug=1"

OK, Anders. I tried "NOHOTPLUG=1" and that did let the pooter get past "Starting PCMCIA." However.... :o) Still problems. After going past the place where it had been hanging the CD loaded until the screen displayed: "linux login:" And there it sat. So I typed "linux" and pressed ENTER. It then displayed: "Have a lot of fun" and then "linux@linux:~" That seemed so promising but again it just sat. So I typed: "startx" and I got the following: "No link to /var/X11R6/bin/X to the correct X server binary. Please confirm the correct X server with SaX/SaX2 which will create the missing link. I'm aborting now." And then it just sat... and it sat.... and it sat... Seems as if we're getting closer, but still something preventing the CD from loading completely. Thx. :o) Gil
Common problem. That Live Eval CD is broken. I've tried it on 3 computers and it failed on all of 'em. Gil Weber wrote:

Well, there was an Athlon 1700+ on ASUS motherboard, a ThinkPad R31 with a PIII and a generic AMD K6 all failed and judging from what I've read here and on the newsgroups, plenty of others are having similar problems. It's BUSTED!!!

It's BUSTED!!! Not entirely. I tried it on an Asus with P3 733 MHz and it seemed to work fine. I haven't tried lots of things yet but at least it booted and got to the desktop.
