[opensuse] [offtopic] is it worth changing from Nvidia to Radeon
Hi With all my plasma hangs i'm thinking of changing to a radeon as my current card is an old geforce210. Does anyone have any advice about a Radeon HD 5450 - cheap as chips at the moment - but will it work okay with the opensource radeon drivers? A full fat graphics card is not necessary for the stuff i do. My HP AMD quad core multimedia laptop has a better than average radeon graphics built in. In Kubuntu 16.04 the graphics drivers suck big time. There are, at least near as I can find, no Catalyst drivers available. Only the crappy ones built in. -- Fast is fine, but accuracy is final. Catalyst has been deprecated for over a year. Mesa is doing rather well lately, and is perfectly capable of running (for example) AAA games with high graphics settings; why do you say it "sucks"? Finally, this is an openSUSE mailing list so your experiences with Kubuntu aren't necessarily relevant. Regards, Huw

We are both using KDE with Plasma. I suppose it is possible that OpenSuse has added different drivers to KDE than what Kubuntu uses. The drivers included in KDE/Plasma barely make the graphics work. It's really kind of hard to explain. When switching from one window to another sometimes the new window opens completely and other times it only partially opens. Parts of the old window still show. It's just a total mess. In 14.04 and Catalyst the graphics are fantastic. -- Fast is fine, but accuracy is final. Hmm. Sometimes distro vendors do weird things, and don't always make the best decisions. Perhaps Kubuntu does something strange with its llvm package. Who can say? As an aside, have you considered KDE Neon? If you don't know, it's a fork of Kubuntu that Jonathan Riddell started after parting ways with Canonical.

I hate to be the guy who says "well it works for me", but it does. I haven't experienced these issues - sorry. Maybe file a bug report? Also, it's been a long time since I used Ubuntu, but when I did I *always* had problems with in-place upgrades. Something always went horribly wrong. I learned the hard way to perform a clean install when a new version released. Kind regards, Huw

I have 2 PCs with HD5450 and one with GF210. I don't notice any performance difference among them whether using nouveau, radeon or modesetting drivers. I spend little time using Plasma, more in TDE and KDE3, and disable all the bling that's practical and easy to do. Since discovering the modesetting driver it is mostly what I use whether with ATI, Intel or NVidia gfxchips. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Maybe my point was too subtle. Does using the (Xorg server integrated in Leap and TW, separate in 13.2) modesetting driver instead of the nouveau driver have any affect on the hanging? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Not tried it, i'll give it a go and see what happens. thanks

FWIW, I never have any hanging in 42.2 nor did I when on 13.2, when using community drivers on any of several Radeon chipsets. It's been my experience that video issues exhibit themselves as black screens, rather than hangs. I learned to look to smartctl if I have unexplained hangs. -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail.
