I wasn't exactly in a panic :) However, I see no reason to order now for a maybe delivery in Sept. What I don't understand is why SuSE announces an upgrade 4 months before they intend to deliver but haven't put any kind of discount program in place. There must be other people like me who would buy now (always a good thing!) but find out there will be an upgrade shortly (sounds like a good thing!) but are told there won't be any discount program (a very bad thing!!!). The obvious result is that I don't want to buy two packages in a row at full price and will a) buy someone else's package who has a better marketing program, b) wait and perhaps change my mind, or c) spend the $$$ on something else altogether. Afterall, if they let me buy 5.2 now and offered a reasonable upgrade price they would have my $$$ in their pocket now and me on the hook for Sept!!! Don't panic! You can order 5.3 from SuSE right now and they'll send it as soon as it's out. That's what I'm doing . The SuSE folks are always happy to please. And BTW, 5.3 is not a secret, either. I think they made that decision around May. Last I heard from SuSE, 5.3 may not be out till early September (in the US). It will be a set of 5 CDs. Gordy Heitzman

I don't speak German but it sure looked like version 5.3 was about to be released in August. Is this correct? There wasn't a mention of 5.3 on the English pages.

1. SuSE releases approx. 3 dists a year 2. SuSE does have a discount program, it's called subscribing. SuSE subscribers pay $35us instead of $50us. 3. SuSE is a German company, hence the the international version of SuSE usually trails the native language version by about 3-4 weeks. Gerry Doris wrote:

SuSE's subscription price of $34.95US is exactly the same as the retail price for the complete distribution offered by CheapBytes. To my mind the subscription price = street price = full retail price. I fail to see any benefit to subscribing other than I receive the upgrades (and invoice) automatically. I still maintain that SuSE should have a more attractive upgrade (or subscription) price for it's users. Gerry On 18-Jul-98 Michael Lankton wrote:

Was that $15 (Australian or US?) for the full version, with 4 CDs, manual, and registration, or for a single CD stripped down version? Cheapbytes sells SuSE 5.2 on a single CD for $1.99, and Linux Mall sells the same for $1.49. These are devoid of manual or registration rights, and also devoid of all 'commercial, or pay' software. Not quite, these 1$ versions are the same version, which you find on our demo CDs or on CD1 of the 'Linux Snapshot'. I believe RH does but I'm not sure about Caldera. After a little "hands on" with all of them, I bought SuSE. Sure, Linux MUST get better....it HAS to, but SuSE has the BEST distribution and they are working hard to make Linux the OS it should be and DESERVES to be. Fred -- Fred A. I subscribe because it's easier to let SuSE do the work of collecting the latest LINUX system and application software than to do it myself. For me this service is easily worth the extra cash. It may not be worth it for others. <self-righteousness> At times in the recent past when I haven't been as prosperous as now I ftp'd the software and was glad because the cash I saved made a difference in the quality of my lifestyle (like being able to pay the rent, bills, etc.). There may be times in the future when I'll have to do this again, so, since I can I choose to give a little back, as it were. Others may see it differently and I can understand why they do. I also have a private motive to subscribe. I like the SuSE distribution. I've used Slackware and Red Hat and have tried Caldera; I prefer SuSE and want to make certain that the fine folks at SuSE know this to encourage them to continue producing this fine distribution. I also want to make certain that do what I can afford to support the whole idea of Open Systems. </self-righteousness> phil gerry doris wrote:

Hmmm. I had written this really eloquent, scathing flame, which I then fortunately deleted. I like Phillip's approach much better, and he makes several good points. $34.95 represents an outstanding value for the bundle, compared to other distributions of linux, not to mention that in other os'es software with equal functionality would set you back in the thousands. I too like SuSE, so much so that I would pay more, and that I spend my personal time in an effort to be helpful to others (hopefully) in this forum. I have also used other dists, and this is precisely why my love for SuSE is so profound. There is no other dist that is more polished out of the box, more well thought out, more comprehensive a collection of applications, is perfect for newbie or guru, or better support in the linux world. But I would say that, I'm a SuSE linux user. phillip mannie wrote:

BTW, I fully agree with your post. I have already got two copies of SuSE's 5.2 demo disk. I've tried out the product and like what I see so much so that I would like to install the full retail version on a new system. I, like you, have no interest in wasting my time downloading GB's of applications from SuSE's website. SuSE have done an excellent job with their distribution and I intend to pay my $$$ and take advantage of this fact. $34.95 for the package IS an outstanding value. In fact, it's an amazing price for such functionality. My whole point is that I believe SuSE's pricing discourages people late in the version cycle from buying. Paying the full street price for the complete package now and then paying again in a few weeks another amount equal to the full street price is expecting a lot. The real problem is that SuSE's authorized agents have discounted the product in such a way as to nullify SuSE's subscription program. Gerry On 18-Jul-98 Michael Lankton wrote:

According to a recent news item in Slashdot, Enlightenment DR0.14 is, at long last, complete -- and ready for download from a number of mirrors. IMHO, this would be a terrific addition to 5.3, if it could get in before the tentative August shipping date. The Linux community seems to be abuzz about Enlightenment right now, and it would be great -- both for Enlightenment as well as the S.u.S.E. distro -- to have DR0.14 available prior to December (the shipping date for 6.0). Have the folks at S.u.S.E. given any discussion to this? Slashdot seems to be online after some off-time during the past few days, and a few people have posted links to E theme pages and the like.
