Hi I have tried to make xine and mplayer to work with *.ogg video format, but no luck. I have not been able to find any "howto" or equivalent. How to play these files under SuSE 8.0 ?? Jaska.

OGG is a sound format, not a video format, try using XMMS (There is an equivalent video format, but it's very new, if you check http://www.xiph.org/ogg/index.html you may find some useful info...) -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.1). Hi Sorry, it was my typo, should have been *.ogm. I got it working by getting ffmpeg library, and installing it to mplayer source-tree, and recompiling mplayer. Jaska. Viestissä Keskiviikko 25. Joulukuuta 2002 14:50, James Ogley kirjoitti:

That statement is infact incorrect. ogg is a media file framework format. Currently the most common use of it is for audio using the Vorbis codec (Something similar to mp3 or WMA but better quality), although there is a vidoe codec called Theora which is also being developed by the Xiph project as well as a voice specific audio codec whos name escapes me right now. (xiph.org seems to be down currently) However ogg being a framework file format it is actually possible to embed mp3 or realaudo/video streams (or indeed an unknown future audio or video format) inside it. Below I have attached info about a new (two weeks old) IETF draft from two friends of mine (who work for CSIRO, the Australian Government Research organisation) specifying the latest ogg enscapulation format. What this means for any of you who have read this far but have not clue what I'm babbling on about :-) is that ogg is very cool and you should most definately use it instead of MP3 or (ick) WMA to store your music collection. Just being pedantic I know, but I hope that clears up any misconceptions :-) Cheers -- Peter Nixon http://www.peternixon.net/ PGP Key: http://www.peternixon.net/public.asc -------- Original Message -------- Subject: I-D ACTION:draft-pfeiffer-ogg-fileformat-00.txt Date: Mon, 09 Dec 2002 08:01:18 -0500 From: Internet-Drafts@ietf.org Reply-To: Internet-Drafts@ietf.org To: IETF-Announce: ; --NextPart A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories. Title : The Ogg encapsulation format version 0 Author(s) : S. Pfeiffer Filename : draft-pfeiffer-ogg-fileformat-00.txt Pages : 20 Date : 2002-12-6 This document describes the Ogg bitstream format version 0, which is a general, freely-available encapsulation format for media streams. It is capable to encapsulate any kind and number of video and audio encoding formats as well as other data streams in a single bitstream. A URL for this Internet-Draft is: http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-pfeiffer-ogg-fileformat-00.txt To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message. After logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then "get draft-pfeiffer-ogg-fileformat-00.txt". A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail. NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE" command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with "multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on how to manipulate these messages. I hope your kidding right? Other wise I would suggest checking out such players as XMMS, KDE's media player Noatun and lots of other players which 9-10 support .ogg files. You may want to check out http://www.opensound.com/ossapps.html for a few hundred sound applications. And KDE and Gnome both have support for these files as long as you have these packages installed... libogg-1.0-42 libogg-devel-1.0-42 Cheers! I was referring to portable players I can use away from the computer.
There exist lots of MP3/CD players but none for OGG.
