[opensuse] OpenOffice.org Novell Edition for Windows
Well not exactly openSUSE related, but now there is the same openoffice that we all enjoy also available for M$ windows, great way of getting people to use openoffice and then gently switch them to Linux. Just so everyone sees the other side of the story.... http://lwn.net/Articles/302435/ Sun's chief open source officer, Simon Phipps, clearly sees Go-OO (and the related OO-Build) as an attempt by Novell to control OOo: The result of this is that go-oo.org is definitely a hostile and competitive fork of OpenOffice.org, and OO-Build is no longer a helpful downstream since it no longer upstreams much of anything (especially for Mac), small changes excepted. Unlike Groklaw I'd still hesitate to call OO-Build a fork, but Go-OO is unmistakably one, just look at the web site, the Windows build and the rhetoric. The motivation for Go-OO being hosted and promoted by Novell and its staff seems unmistakable to me, as does the fact it is a Novell-sponsored fork. They are promoting Microsoft's flakey XSLT-based OOXML support, they are isolating Linux from OpenOffice.org (so that no-one in the main OpenOffice.org community is able to get support contracts from Linux users). And it is all cleverly wrapped in a community-friendly story about hackers and their freedom and evil, controlling Sun, delivered without interference from Novell corporate. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Clayton, while the linked article could be regarded relatively balanced (though it contains factual errors - e.g. there's no connection between go-oo & odfconverter, apart from the fact that Novell also distributes the latter; and one could also argue whether Novell's relation to MS is significantly closer than Sun's), the cited statement from Simon (taken from a Novell-bashing site) is clearly not. I'm an OOo hacker, sponsored by Novell, earlier by Sun; and do have the insight to tell you that most of what Simon says is way off base. BTW, when you post biased statements like that, I'd consider it good style when you revealed your affiliation... The product sounds interesting. The page is unclear about the difference between the free download and the one you can purchase. In the FAQ it says (1) the difference is the one you pay for comes with support, while it also says (2) updates are available to those with a support agreement. So, there are no updates planned to be available for the free download version? -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. It is like talking about large city with all constructions finished. I actually learned from this list - the openSUSE version of OOo is actually GoOO - a branch of OpenOffice, with bettter interpopratilty filters, actual VBScript and a few other changes: http://go-oo.org/ You can run this on Wintendo or Cult-Of-Mac machines too. I discovered that you cannot yet use some of the extensions... particularly the PDF importer. There is a bug open on it to fix this, but it's not in the stable go-oo branch for openSUSE 11.0. I found that PDF importer worked in 64 bit, but not 32 bit OpenSUSE OOo. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

soo, what is the news-bimbo-like dribble about windoze finally being able to enjoy the same oo as we linucs favorite people of God have been for long? someone might just quote the above and then it becomes "proof" that novell introduced oo to windoze!!!! some people watch network tv news too much, they start thinking the same way the news is distorted into them! or.... was it novell all the time? d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
