It's a little backwards - you would need to set it up in the firewall if you were running a mail server and wanted others to be able to download mail from you.
Why don't you use something a little newer and user friendly to set up, like evolution or kmail? If you start evolution there will be a nice wizard to guide you along in your mail setup. No need at all to do anything to your firewall.

I would join a previous comment someone made you. Take a shell and write evolution (enter) and follow the steps. You are not trying to fetch your email as root, are you?
