Re: [SLE] Need to confirm XF86Config changes
Ed, when I boot up Suse 7.0 it says that I am using Kernal 2.2.16 Is XFree86 4.0.2 somehow interpreting my kernal as 2.0.30?? I don't understand how this happened. I intalled 4.0.2 using files from XFree86.org because I was getting all these weird errors and symbolic link complaints from the rpm packages that I originally tried from the Suse ftp site. Neither SaX, nor SaX2 would work to setup Xwindow system, so I figured I may as well try to install XFree from another source. 4.0.2 is now definitely installed as you can see from the log output. But it sounds like I have a kernal problem now. Mike At 1/21/01 11:09:00 AM, you wrote:

Michael,
I just noticed a BIG difference in out /var/log/XFree86.0.log files.
You are running kernel 2.0.30, correct? I have searched the xfree.org site and cannot see that this would be a limitation on using X 4.0.2, but it may.
I am using kernel 2.4.0, just recently upgraded from 2.2.18.
Which version of SuSE do you have?
This leads me to ask where you got 4.0.2, from SuSE? Is it the one designed for SuSE 7.0? This may cause a problem, but I really have no facts that confirm that.
SuSE has an update to kernel 2.2.18 in RPM form.
Maybe someone who better understands the relationship between SuSE version, kernel version and X 4.0.2 will jump in here. In the meantime I am editing my XF86Config file based on your X logfile to send to you as an attachment.
** Reply to message from mhf <michael.flug@snet.net> on Sun, 21 Jan 2001 12:2:51 -0500 The top of the XFree86.0.log says you are running:
XFree86 Version 4.0.2 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400) Release Date: 18 December 2000 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ) Operating System: Linux 2.0.30 i686 [ELF]
Notice Operating System. You can check by doing uname -r, and it should return the kernel version, like 2.0.30, but hopefully something like 2.2.14 or 2.2.16. A kernel update is quite separate from an X server update -- 2 different animals.
