'm looking to buy a dig. camera that takes at least reasonably sharp pics, uses USB, and is EASY to get to work with 7.3. Anyone with a recommendation? Thanks, Fred -- The suicide bombers, and Islam in general, come to mind... "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities" - Voltaire
I've spent the past few weeks looking at Digital Cameras under $500US. Some of my friends in the Linux community like the Nikon Coolpix 775 (2MP). The newest version is Nikon Coolpix 2500. These are under $400US. I have chosen the Canon Power Shot S30. This is a 3.0 MP camera. Some considerations: 1. Memory Smart Media, Compact Flash and Memory Stick. Smart Media 128MB cards are running about $50US, CFI cards are about $70US. Compact Flash readers run about $25US (SansDisk). 2. Battery. Many different battery types. Some cameras take AA batteries, some use proprietary rechargable. Some cameras can recharge by plugging the camera into an AC adaptor. Most have external rechargers. The lithium based batteries generally have about a 2 hour use period. 3. Features. Most of the better cameras in this range feature 3x optical zoom. Most cameras store pictures in jpeg, tiff or raw mode. 4. Linux compatibility. Just about all cameras will look like a disk in Linux. Virtually all the cameras will work with Linux. Here are some good web sites where you can get features. http://www.steves-digicams.com/ - Reviews on most of the Cameras http://www.dpreview.com/ Excellent reviews but fewer cameras are reviewed. http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,81989,tk,cx031102b,00.asp http://www.dcresource.com/ On 8 Apr 2002 at 9:26, Fred A. Everyone who sees my Canon PowerShot S110 ELPH wants one. It works really well with Linux (SanDisk/Gphoto2), and the battery life is better than the reviews have claimed. The camera is an ELPH form factor(smaller than a deck of cards,) is easy to use, and is quite rugged. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER1@MN.RR.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE
I have been using a Sony DSC-S70 Cyber Shot which connects directly to my usb hub and can be mounted as a vfat drive on 7.3. BTW Please avoid insulting other peoples' religion on this or any list. I do not like to think that Muslims should be able to fire their prejudices against Christianity onto the internet, so let us not start it. Peter On Monday 08 April 2002 2:26 pm, you wrote:

Thanks,
Fred I just spent the last two weeks collecting information from my camera friends about digital cameras. These people are professional photographers, both film and filmless and it sems for my budget(>$600US)that the Minolta DiMage 5 is the best bet. It acts as an SLR to some extent. Another recommendation was the Nikon Coolpix 990,smaller lense but it rotates allowing you to to view the LCD or anyone else.Cool fearture but makes the camera a bit cumbersome. Also I've heard wonderful thing about the Canon Pwershot G3. More Megapixels the sharper the image, and digital zoom is less important than optical zoom. Lastly,if you really want to spend $$.Check out the Nikon D1.Very nice but out of my price range. Hope this helps Cheers

I've been happily using the Nikon Coolpix 775 without any problems. It is easier to use with Linux than Windows. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MSCE, N+ you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one Got spam? Get SPASTIC http://spastic.sourceforge.net
