[SLE] Email Attachment Problem
i am using the default SuSE firewall configuration from the 6.2 CDs and along with IPmasquerading for an internal network, i am able to use the linux computer as a firewall/IPmasq/dial-out computer to the internet. i am able to browse the Internet and send emails and ftp thru browser but i am having problems receiving email with attachments. i was downloading an email message with a 32 Kb Word attachment but it got stuck downloading that file. i had to call the ISP and had them delete that file from the POP3 server. i tried to download from the linux, win98 and NT server computers (using both netscape and outlook express) and they all got stuck on the same email message. at what port do email attachments come in? is it the same port as the email itself? is there a setting in the SuSE default firewall setup that denies attachments to emails (i just filled in the pertinent parts in /etc/rc.config). any help is greatly appreciated . . . thanks! mac <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD W3 HTML//EN"> <HEAD> <META content=text/html;charset=iso-8859-1 http-equiv=Content-Type> <META content='"MSHTML 4.72.3110.7"' name=GENERATOR> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=2>i am using the default SuSE firewall configuration from the 6.2 CDs and along with IPmasquerading for an internal network, i am able to use the linux computer as a firewall/IPmasq/dial-out computer to the internet.</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>i am able to browse the Internet and send emails and ftp thru browser but i am having problems receiving email with attachments.</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>i was downloading an email message with a 32 Kb Word attachment but it got stuck downloading that file. i had to call the ISP and had them delete that file from the POP3 server.</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>i tried to download from the linux, win98 and NT server computers (using both netscape and outlook express) and they all got stuck on the same email message. at what port do email attachments come in? is it the same port as the email itself? is there a setting in the SuSE default firewall setup that denies attachments to emails (i just filled in the pertinent parts in /etc/rc.config).</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>any help is greatly appreciated . . .</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>thanks!</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>mac</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2></FONT> </DIV></BODY>

Don't understand why you did this, but never mind.

Right. There is no way that kernel firewalling rules (as used by the SuSE firewall script) can allow emails in, but not attachments. The attachment and the text of the email are one complete thing - every attachment sent in an email is converted into text for the transfer. Have you tried downloading other emails with other attachments? I'm sure if someone really tried, they could rig up sendmail or whatever to detect attachments and stop downloading/delete the mail, but that would require a lot of effort, and your standard install of whatever-you're-using will *not* do that. Basically, I don't know to solve it, but there is no way that it is being blocked by your firewall. Maybe Linux has taken a dislike to word documents ;-) Hope you find a solution, Chris PS Don't write in HTML, many people don't like it. -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
