I have a USB Microsoft Intellimouse, that works perfectly fine during YAST2. Once the install is finished, the start up screen rolls by, and USB HAS FAILED is listed, and it recommends changing something in the BIOS, anyone have any ideas to troubleshoot this? thanks, -Chris

I get a message like this. It tells me USB failed and says "perhaps USB is disabled in BIOS." Of course it is enabled in BIOS and works great in Windows. My mouse can be USB or PS2, so I simply use it as PS2. I posted this failed USB question here twice and got no replies. The last time I checked the SuSE database (not recently) I could find no relevant articles. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional KMail 1.0.29.2 Bryan S. Hi.
I'm glad to see that I am not the only stupid in the world who is having
problems with USB. I've found the following:
-Better use modules.
-Change main kernel USB device file (such as uhci.c or whatever), placing an
appropiate "#undef DEBUG" where appropiate, and recompile. If not,
/var/log/messages will grow without end.
-Check /etc/rc.config and a usb file in /etc/rc.config.d for usb stuff.
-Incorporate usbdevfs in /etc/fstab.
-Load modules manually.
With this, I've been completely succesful in a laptop using ohci.c, and
partially on a desktop with uhci.c. My tests are with an USB mouse and an
USB keyboard. I even have X on the laptop with two mice (PS/2 and USB). On
the desktop the USB mouse has never worked, but the USB keyboard works.
Check USB interrupts with 'cat /proc/interruypts'; you should see the usb
thing there. For example, I press/release SHIFT or CTRL and it increments
interrupts in 2.
Here is my USB part in .config (laptop, 2.2.16):
CONFIG_USB=y
# CONFIG_USB_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_USB_DEVICEFS=y
# CONFIG_USB_BANDWIDTH is not set
# CONFIG_USB_UHCI is not set
# CONFIG_USB_UHCI_ALT is not set
CONFIG_USB_OHCI=m
# CONFIG_USB_PRINTER is not set
# CONFIG_USB_SCANNER is not set
# CONFIG_USB_AUDIO is not set
# CONFIG_USB_ACM is not set
# CONFIG_USB_SERIAL is not set
# CONFIG_USB_IBMCAM is not set
# CONFIG_USB_OV511 is not set
# CONFIG_USB_DC2XX is not set
# CONFIG_USB_MDC800 is not set
# CONFIG_USB_STORAGE is not set
# CONFIG_USB_DABUSB is not set
# CONFIG_USB_PLUSB is not set
# CONFIG_USB_PEGASUS is not set
# CONFIG_USB_RIO500 is not set
# CONFIG_USB_DSBR is not set
# CONFIG_USB_MICROTEK is not set
CONFIG_USB_HID=m
# CONFIG_USB_KBD is not set
# CONFIG_USB_MOUSE is not set
# CONFIG_USB_WACOM is not set
# CONFIG_USB_WMFORCE is not set
CONFIG_INPUT_KEYBDEV=m
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV=m
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV_SCREEN_X=800
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV_SCREEN_Y=600
# CONFIG_INPUT_JOYDEV is not set
# CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV is not set
Perhaps you can try with 2.4.
Good luck.
