I have a system (SuSE 8.1) that cannot play audio CDs. The problem seems to lie either in the drives (both of them!) or the sound card, because replacing the cable had no effect. In Windows, I can play audio CDs using Media Player (although not using CD player) so I assume that the direct audio output isn't working. However, is there a Linux app that can do what MediaPlayer does and read the audio data of the disc and play it? OK, it's not the ideal solution, but it looks like my only chance to hear CDs on this computer :-( TiA John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank Fields of Valour: 2 Norse clans battle on one of 3 different boards

--------------------------- John, Have you checked your mixer settings yet? Sounds like the volume is turned down or off for the cd player. Do you get regular sounds in Linux/KDE? If so, then you know your sound is operational and you just need to turn up the volume for the cd in the mixer! Patrick --- KMail v1.4.3 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.1 --- Registered Linux User #225206

I use Gnome2, so no mixer AFAIK. Playing CDs through Xmms or the Gnome CD player shows that the app believes that the disc is playing (track progress bar moves) but no sound comes out of the speakers. If I play an mp3 file using Xmms or an audio stream using RealPlayer, however, it is fine. Any more ideas?
