Running SuSE 10.0. Installed xorg 6.9 (from gwdg.de). X would not start -- it could not find various modules. Added ModulePath lines to xorg.conf. Now X started. mikus

When I try to upgrade to xorg 6.9 under SuSE 10.0 it wants to delete LOTS of stuff I need, for instance: ImageMagick ImageMagick-Magick++ ImageMagick-Magick++-devel ImageMagick-devel abiword gnumeric inkscape libxine1 psiconv pstoedit pstoedit-devel totem xine-ui I spent several hours in dependency hell trying to resolve everything, finally gave up and went back to the previous version of xorg which works fine. It's complex, but doable. [I use 'smart --gui' in situations where an installation wants to delete/downgrade stuff -- that gives me listings (of more than one package version) that I can manipulate via RMB menus to get closer to achieving what I would like.] The majority of the proposed deletions I got rid of by doing only those new package installs that did NOT want to delete, followed by SuSEconfig and reboot. Apparently that "adjusted" the list of installed packages so that the dependency hell diminished. Then by trial and error I found that 'ImageMagick 6.2.3-4.2' in the SuSE repository caused the remaining deletes. I marked __that__ version 'Locked' (smart allows this with packages that are yet to be fetched) and that meant no more difficulty with installing. mikus p.s. I *do* have at least two problems with this xorg 6.9 : - it screws up when I try to Logon as an additional user (i.e., I want to end up in screen alt-F8). - while the system was running, X overflowed /var with (hundreds of megabytes of) repeated 'waiting for idle' messages in Xorg.0.log. (I run a background job that consumes 100% of the CPU cycles 24/7).

You can just download the source to the new ImageMagick and recompile on your system to the new 6.9. That eliminates all problems and you can continue to use 6.9 X.org software. Any of the mirrors you use to get your new KDE files will have the X.org 6.9 as well. You just have to go back a few directories to find it. regards, Lee

You're asking for a gun to shoot yourself in the foot. Running X.org 6.9 on SUSE 10.0 will gain you exactly 0 advantage over the X.org that's included in the distribution. It won't run faster and won't do anything more than the included X.org. Better wait for 10.1 that has X.org 6.9 and way cooler, has Xgl.

Except for bugfixes ;) In my case 6.9 came as a bless since it has the fix for a serious and extremely annoying problem with console switching on Intel 82845G integrated VGA controller.
It won't run faster and won't do anything more than the included X.org.
