Hi Susers, Hello guys!!! I need some suggestion on what to do on activating the RAID 1 Level. As a I read from the documentation was to compile the kernel. We have a Suse 7.0 evaluation copy (2.2.16-SMP kernel) with a Ultra Wide SCSI RAID CARD AAA-131SA and 2 HDD 4 GB's. If I enable the RAID 1 on the kernel do i need to run the cron or any backup solution? Does those backup solution can copy the Boot or do I need to have a boot disk? What are the things that i need to consider before compiling the kernel? Do i need the raidtools package? Any help very much appreciated... Thanks. -- Jonathan J. Huh?
You are trying to do Mirroring accross these disks with SoftRAID? If that is
the case then yes you should load the RAID utils. Howeveer, go get the SuSE
7.1 and read the manual.......it will help you and the newer packages
available in 7.1....I have not played much with RAID in software as I
generally do not think it is a good idea for production servers. But if this
is a home system you might see some benefit in redundancy....for speed try
RAID 0+1 (mirror and stripe) If you are on a budget you can do this I have
heard with IDE disks, maybe multiple controllers as IDE has the limits with
master/slave

Jon

If you have a RAID Card no...but I thought you just have a SCSI interface right? Jon On Mon, 30 Apr 2001, Jonathan Terbio wrote:

Hi. I use Suse 7.0 with kernel upgraded to 2.4.2. I have an USB mouse and USB radio plugged, having a VIA chipset&USB controller on mobo. I am trying newer kernels (so far 2.4.3 and 2.4.4) without success: USB mouse doesn't work, 'lsusb' gives incorrect results, many warnings on /var/log/messages, etc. The error appears early on the boot process. Here are some lines from /var/log/messages at the beginning of the boot process with 2.4.2 (no problem): Apr 30 12:09:59 capricho syslogd 1.3-3: restart. Apr 30 12:10:02 capricho kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg started. Apr 30 12:10:02 capricho kernel: Loaded 15305 symbols from /boot/System.map-2.4.2. Apr 30 12:10:02 capricho kernel: Symbols match kernel version 2.4.2. Apr 30 12:10:02 capricho kernel: Loaded 194 symbols from 9 modules. Apr 30 12:10:02 capricho kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/1, assigned device number 2 Apr 30 12:10:02 capricho kernel: usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x5c7/0x1002) is not claimed by any active driver. Apr 30 12:10:02 capricho kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 3 Apr 30 12:10:02 capricho kernel: usb.c: USB device 3 (vend/prod 0x4b4/0x1002) is not claimed by any active driver. Apr 30 12:10:02 capricho kernel: eth0: 3c509 at 0x300, 10baseT port, address 00 20 af 69 04 fb, IRQ 9. With 2.4.4 problems are shown early: Apr 30 12:14:06 capricho syslogd 1.3-3: restart. Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg started. Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: Loaded 15542 symbols from /boot/System.map-2.4.4. Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: Symbols match kernel version 2.4.4. Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: Loaded 186 symbols from 9 modules. Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: hub.c: Cannot enable port 1 of hub 1, disabling port. Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: hub.c: Maybe the USB cable is bad? Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 2 Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x4b4/0x1002) is not claimed by any active driver. Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: irda_init() Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: irlmp_init() Apr 30 12:14:09 capricho kernel: eth0: 3c5x9 at 0x300, 10baseT port, address 00 20 af 69 04 fb, IRQ 9. Above, 0x5c7 corresponds to Qtronix (manufacturer of the USB mouse), and 0x4b4 is Cypress (manufacturer of the USB radio). So it seems that hub.c in 2.4.4 has problems with a simple USB mouse. Any idea?
