Recompiling the kernel...
If a Red Hat book tell me to: "go to the /usr/src/linux directory, and run make config" how am I suposed to do that in SuSE? If I do it just like that theres not even a file in the linux directory, so instead of geting into the /linux I am going to the /linux-2.2.18 and there is a .config file which I modified but how do I compile it now? ===== Ricardo A. ~ be sure that you have installed: gcc compiler, binutils, and kernel source before you start. then in Console window, as <root> , do: cd /usr/src/linux .................. for a more visually elegant x-windows selection method, type: # make xconfig ......................................................... after you have selected your preferred configuration : # make dep clean bzImage next # make modules # make modules_install best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________
If you want the easy way to do this the follow these small steps which by the way are valid with ANY Linux distribution. 1. startx 2. open an xterm and suing to root example: sux then give password when prompted. 3. cd into /usr/src/linux which should point to /usr/src/<kernel directory> 4. type make xconfig This will let you go through a GUI configuration tool and pick what you want and what you don't want. Make sure that you are careful with this because if you replace your kernel or modify the vmlinuz.suse (backup copy of the kernel) then you could be in for a pain in the ass. After you have completed this then you should read the part of the manual that shows you exactly what to type and why it's to be typed. Then you can proceed to compile a new kernel and install it. :) Cheers! * Ricardo Rodriguez (rik73106@yahoo.com) [010822 23:09]: ->If a Red Hat book tell me to: "go to the ->/usr/src/linux directory, and run make config" -> ->how am I suposed to do that in SuSE? -> ->If I do it just like that theres not even a file in ->the linux directory, so instead of geting into the ->/linux I am going to the /linux-2.2.18 and there is a ->.config file which I modified but how do I compile it now? -> ->===== ->Ricardo A. how am I suposed to do that in SuSE?
With Yast you need to go into the 'd' section, and from there add: i] linux Rest of the kernel source code Then hit F10, and do the install. Its in general, as you did not tell us what SuSE version you are using.
If I do it just like that theres not even a file in the linux directory, so instead of geting into the /linux I am going to the /linux-2.2.18 and there is a .config file which I modified but how do I compile it now?
