[opensuse] xset s 600 s blank does not appear to work
When I am under on of the other window managers, like Fvwm, my screen now fails to dim after the prescribed time. This was working in the past, before my system crash, and I lost my notes on what to do. If I run openSuse System Settings, manually enable Power Management, then go to Power management I can set a time to dim the screen. But I used to be able to do that directly under X. Doesn't xset work under X any more? I tried doing the xset as root, also without success. Is there some set of services I can enable to provide the screen blanking? Thanks, and sorry for the a bit off topic Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I tried putting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="consoleblank=600" in my grub file to add the kernel parameter. I have not tried rebooting yet. Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That is not "off-topic" here. xset --help man xset will both provide you the necessary information. and xset works fine, I have been using it for several years rather than a pretty picture screen blanker, but it does not "lock" the screen/keyboard. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The command I use (xset s 600 s blank) is given in the title. The relevant (It think) output of xset q is: Screen Saver: prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes timeout: 600 cycle: 600 DPMS (Energy Star): Standby: 600 Suspend: 600 Off: 600 DPMS is Enabled Monitor is On It appears to understand my command, but the screen never blanks! And the screen blanks automagically after about 5 minutes or immediately if I tell it to from command-line (1 second delay).
What command do you use to blank from the command line? Forgot that one:-) 600 should give you 10 minute (60 * 10) time out, so with 5 minute delay it sounds like you have something else going on here. 5 minutes is "feels like", never measured and time is acceptable so I really don't care :). I usually blank the screen from the cl anyway. sleep 1;xset dpms force off You can assign the cl to a hotkey sequence or make it an alias cmd or a script or call the script from a hotkey or .... I also set xset params in my login profile -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have had problems with the screen blanking when I didn't want it to. It might be getting overridden by the settings for the desktop environment. Where do you put your commands? I have them in .xsession, but that only gets executed with the xdm display manager I think. I set the display manager and default window manager in yast2 sysconfig. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

maybe it isn't getting initiated or ?? try from cl: xset s reset xset s activate xset s on all or in combinations or ... -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I tried all of the xset options suggested in the replies. xset still does not work on my machine. I added consoleblank=600 to the boot command line, and that does cause blanking in 10 minutes as desired. I do not know what is wrong with xset, something openSuse sets up? Anyway, no longer a problem. Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
