[opensuse] DVD-Writer/ROM speed limit
Hi all, I have a "damaged" DVD that starts wobbling in the drive when it spins up to be read. Is there is way to limit die DVD drive to only read at 1x speed? (it works fine when I load it into my old DVD-player) Manne -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Perhaps. hdparm: -E Set cdrom speed. This is NOT necessary for regular operation, as the drive will automatically switch speeds on its own. But if you want to play with it, just supply a speed number after the option, usually a number like 2 or 4. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Will this slow the burning of a DVD so that an older DVD-ROM can read the disks? CWSIV -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

?? AFAIK The speed a DVD has been written has nothing to do with the speed it can be read at later date. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. He's a slow reader, so please don't type so fast. ;-) -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The above does not modify the burning speed, only the read speed. And the speed at which the dvd was burned is not related at all to the speed at which it can be read. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. No, but using another type of disc might help. The original type is DVD-R. (Note that there's a hyphen in the name, not a minus sign. It was just meant to indicate a recordable DVD.) Early DVD readers were built to understand DVD-R discs. Later, some improvements were incorporated, such as slightly higher capacity. Because they were thought to be in some ways "more" than a DVD-R, they got the name DVD+R. These days, nearly every disc drive can read both types (as well as others that have been developed since, such as DVD+R DL, but there are still some older disc drives that can read only DVD-R. So if you're burning DVDs for early equipment, you might have better luck if you stick with DVD-R discs. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
