Support for Philips 180P broken in SuSE 9.0?
Suse People: I recently upgraded my mail laptop to 9.0. As an external monitor, I have a Philips 180P. Unfortunately, in 9.0 the driver for the 180P seems to have vanished from YAST without explanation. I cannot get my 180P to work properly with generic LCD drivers or the most similar driver (the 181AS); the system complains that the refresh rate is wrong and won't display at 1280x1024. What happened to the 180P drivers, and how do I fix this? Any pointers on how to search the archives of this list? I can't find them at Suse.com. -- -Josh Berkus Aglio Database Solutions San Francisco
Folks,
What happened to the 180P drivers, and how do I fix this?
Any pointers on how to search the archives of this list? I can't find them at Suse.com.

I'm sure your tone will elicit a quick response from the unpaid volunteer SuSE employes who help us on the list. Look at every message footer for the archive information. Google has the answer. Also Yahoo and Licos. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711
Louis, Patrick, Thank you for pointers, and sorry that my tone stung you -- it was not aimed at you. I'm a bit frustrated; one does not expect a linux upgrade to break compatibility with hardware -- that's a Windows experience. As you can imagine, I'm more than a bit put out to have a blank & silent $1000 monitor on my desk.

I apologise to the volunteer, but not to SuSE. They should have a paid person reading this list and responding to queries. And, for that matter, updating the searchable knowledge base. Hopefully the Novell acquistion will improve customer service for English-language markets.

Regarding the 180P? No, it does not. Believe me, I spent about two hours on it.
A quick look at the Philips web site says this will do 1280x1024 at 75hz.
Choose LCD 1280x1024@75hz
If that won't work, we'll just try again. The Philips site lists the frequencys and resolutions this runs at. If, however, it does not work ... try to give a little more info such as the complete model number etc..
Thanks, Louis. I did try generic LCD at a lower refresh rate, but Sax2 kept bugging out and refusing to let me configure it. I also tried re-installing the XF86Config file that I had before the upgrade (which I thankfully backed up) but that didn't do any good; the system steadfastly refused to display at 1280x1024, continually reverting to 1024x768. Will tinker some more with the generic LCD settings. This is made rather more painful, of course, by the fact that KDM no longer has a "restart X server" option, forcing me to reboot the machine every time I want to try new settings. -- -Josh Berkus Aglio Database Solutions San Francisco

When you boot your PC, enter the number 3 at the first grub boot screen. This will boot you up without X in console mode. Now you should be able to run sax2 and test different settings. You can also run startx to see the final results after a good test in sax2. The advantage here is that X will quit when you log out from startx. No more rebooting. It would seem to me that your old XF86Config should have worked as it did before. If not get a working config (even if the res is not what you want) and copy the Screen, Modes, and Monitor sections over from your old one. If your video card has changed, the screen section may not be able to be copied over. In that case try simple entries like the following: Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 16 SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection Then change the two depth settings to 24, 32, etc. in case your card has specific limits at this resolution. Good luck and I'm sure someone with more XF86Config knowledge will tell us a better way to do this ;-). -- Louis D. Richards LDR Interactive Technologies

Grazie. Haven't got used to Grub (as opposed to Lilo) yet.

Nope, same video card. The problem *could* be broken support for my video card. The wierd thing is, when I start it with the old XF86Config, I get an error message from the monitor (don't know what it says, error messages have an annoying habit of displaying for 0.3 seconds) and then XFree drops to 1024x768 mode. It also can't seem to size to the screen correctly; the display is too tall for the screen by about 2". Why I find this all mysterios is that, in 8.2, there was a specific monitor option for the 180P in YaST -- which worked brilliantly, and is part of the reason why I bought the monitor. Now the 180P choice is gone from YaST, and not explanation exists in the SDB. -- -Josh Berkus Aglio Database Solutions San Francisco
<-big snip-> Josh, FYI, when I run "SaX2 -l" (lower case L switch for low res) from root in console mode, it runs in VESA compliant VGA mode and I can reconfigure/verify my graphics card & monitor settings **temporarily** before making the changes permanent - no reboot necessary. regards, - Carl - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - C. <snipp> Not much information to go on ... oh well ... lets see what happens here.
I googled on "philips 180p" and from the responses will assume this is an LCD monitor. A quick look at the Philips web site says this will do 1280x1024 at 75hz. You can search the list in several ways ... I use http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=suse-linux-e

I would imagine that several people from SuSE read this list even though it is a user supported list. I hope this has helped and your feelings of abandonment have diminished. -- Louis D. Richards LDR Interactive Technologies
