Suse 9.1: DVD Recorder hangup over CDRs...
Greetings! I just recently got a Samsung DVD Recorder (actually, it's Toshiba drive... go figure). Since I don't have any blank DVDs, I tried blank CDs (TDK 8x and Samsung 52x) to test out the drive. The drive has trouble recognizing that there's a blank CD in the "cup holder" and flashes the panel light. If I re-insert the CD two or three times, the drive behaves normally and I can record the CD without problems. It also hangs up on manufactured CDs, but plays nice with DVDs. I tried this drive on my Windows XP system, and it has the same problems. Is this normal for DVD recorders? Or does my new drive hate CDs? Thanks! Christopher Reimer

Sounds like odd behavior to me and I think others will agree. Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"

Only with broken ones. :)
Thanks!

Search for updated firmware for that drive at Samsung and Toshiba and anywhere else you can google or think of. Maybe all that is needed to get it behaving. Otherwise I'd suspect bad hardware. Stan

Already did. Didn't change the behavior. The firmware flash program was also Windows only and that was a pain to take care of. Thanks! Christopher Reimer

Given that it has problems with manufactured CDs, I'd suspect a drive problem. I recently replaced my Samsung (hmm... a trend?) DVD player, because it was giving me problems with both manufactured and recorded CDs and even on occasion with movie DVDs (the player was connected to my TV & stereo, not my computer). In my experiece, as well as a friend's, Samsung is a brand best avoided.

I had no problems using a Samsung DVD drive, CDR/DVD combo drive and hard drive on my system. But I think those drives are made by Samsung. The DVD Recorder is actually a Toshiba drive, and that particular drive seems to be problematic from what I been reading on the internet. I'm waiting for the blank DVDs to come in and run some tests before I decide what to do with the drive. I'll probably end up returning it. Thanks, Christopher

Turns out the problem with the Samsung DVD-Recorder is that it doesn't like ultra-cheap CDs (including TDK and Samsung 52x CDRs). It has no problems with reading or recording DVDs (including Samsung DVD-Rs). Thanks for all the help! Christopher Reimer
