RE: [SLE] Once a FAT32 always a FAT32?
I have just rebuilt my home PC with a new 17GB HD, and I have had problems with FAT 32. I NEED Windows 98, NT 4 and Linux to live on this one machine. I have 3 Hard Disks, 1, 17GB, 1, 1.2GB and a 1 Gb SCSI. I tied to set up the 17 GB as I thought fit, with a 4GB Fat32 win98 part, a 4GB ext2 part and a 4GB NTFS part and the rest all Fat32 storage space. I wanted to use the 128MB spare on the SCSI disk as swap, but cocked up the kernel so it would not see it. Problems. NT could not see the C: drive and could not install its boot loader. Linux could not install Lilo into the mbr of C:\.(1024 sector problem) Solutions, Now this might not be the most elegant way, but I had to reduce the first fat32 part to 2GB and use Partition magic 4 to convert it back to FAT16. I then made a 4gb part for Linux, and a new 2gb part for NTFS, and then left the rest for FAT32 storage. I also moved my swap to my 2nd HD and used the basic IDE kernel to boot that. Win 98 was still booting OK, NT was then able to see my C: drive and install itself, and I installed Linux onto the 4Gb part with lilo booting a LOGICAL non active partition. I used the same advice about striping out the Linux Bootsecter as given before, copied it to my Fat16 boot partition, and used NT Bootloader to get all thing working fine. This has now taken me about 1-2 weeks on and off trying to get this sorted, mainly by trail and error, sometimes I installed Lilo into the MBR of my first partition, stuffing win98 and NT, I then had to repair NT, and lost Linux. I must of installed Win98 once, NT about 4 times (I did not make a repair disk), and Linux twice. Anyway, as of last night I cracked it.............. Triple boot into Win98, NT 4 and SuSE Linux 6.0. Now all I have to do is re-install all the applications...........ARGH Tim Delbaere Environment & 0171 692 8024 ) EGH 603 <mailto:txdelbae@ctrl.co.uk>
