Well, Rui, Lynn overreacted, but to us native English speakers a more appropriate wording of a genuine question would have been "why _do_ you want to restart udev?" Using the conditional "would" in this situation is usually a dismissive sneer rather than a question. I guess Lynn is stressed or she might have taken language differences into account. Or dismissed without comment what she interpreted as rudeness on your part. Further, you did this, apparently, for no reason other than you presumed to know his needs better than he. It was a mistake by not including the answer in my first reply. In the eager to provide the best answer, I unintentionally neglected the direct one. Nonetheless, it is a mistake. A mistake of this nature does not give anyone the right to -logically- be annoyed and/or be disrespectful. I was merely trying to help someone. John E. Perry does have a point. The usage of the word "would" could have been interpreted as dismissive - It was not my intention. Your last paragraph does point out a few interesting tips :) valid to us all. I am a user/member of openSUSE/openSUSE List for about 6 years. I've asked for help and helped others, made incorrect questions and was questioned incorrectly. No user, until today, reacted in this manner toward me. I have to assume that this kind of attitude is not the correct one. -- Rui Santos http://www.ruisantos.com/ Veni, vidi, Linux! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Wait, so, because "you have work to do", you think it's ok to ask other people to do work that you don't have time or desire to do, for you, for free, but you want the results of the work.... That's the very definition of a service that you should pay for. I think most here were under the impression that you wanted to figure things out and do things yourself but merely need some help and guidance. If you just want other people to do work for you for free, that's abuse. What makes your time more important than mine? Or anyone elses? I gotta hear this. Brian K. /etc/init.d/boot.udev restart Though I don't thing you need to restart it to get rules changes in effect. Possibly for the main config file. Just edit your rule and retry your action, edit the rule... I have had to work on rules a few times, yet I don't think I've ever restarted udevd on any machine ever. -- Brian K. That would be the "reload" verb, correct? That's the usual way to handle configuration changes in servers smart enough to support incremental reconfiguration (Apache is another example).

Generally yes. But this touches a sort of bug with me. Just as I prefer that the default action be to receive answers to questions that I actually ask, so do I prefer to answer questions as asked, as long as they were answerable at all. I know there is a reload option, and I know it's probably all anyone ever needs, and I also know that reload is different from restart and they asked about restart. Maybe they are replacing the udevd binary? Maybe they are testing the restart action of the script itself? Probaby not but all I need to know is that I don't know. But you're right I probably should have pointed it out as a suggestion in addition to the strict-interpretation answer. Brian K.
