[opensuse] 11.3 - switch from gdm to kdm, kdm won't display - only xdm??
Guys, Changing from gdm to kdm, I modified the displaymanager settings in sysconfig and set the displaymanager to kdm and the theme to a theme name in /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes as follows: 14:59 zephyr:~> noc /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_STARTS_XSERVER="yes" DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER_TCP_PORT_6000_OPEN="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN="" DISPLAYMANAGER_PASSWORD_LESS_LOGIN="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_AD_INTEGRATION="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_SHUTDOWN="auto" DISPLAYMANAGER_RANDR_MODE_VGA="" DISPLAYMANAGER_RANDR_MODE_auto="1024x768_60 64.11 1024 1080 1184 1344 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync" DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER="Xorg" KDM_USERS="" KDM_GREETSTRING="" DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="lzfy-kde4" DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_LOCALARGS="" 14:59 zephyr:~> noc /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager DEFAULT_WM="gnome" INSTALL_DESKTOP_EXTENSIONS="yes" X_MOUSE_CURSOR="DMZ" KDE_USE_IPV6="yes" KDE_BUILD_GLOBAL_SYCOCA="initial" KDE_USE_IDN="yes" But regardless of what I set the theme to, all I ever get is that generic square xdm login with the round clock above the username/password fields. A reboot is also a *runlevel* change that is more "drastic" so trying "anything" again will accomplish nothing in this case. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not sure if this helps but i did the following on my 11.2 system cat /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager | grep DISPLAYMA DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm4" DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="no" # that root can never login if DISPLAYMANAGER_SHUTDOWN is "auto" and DISPLAYMANAGER_ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_STARTS_XSERVER="yes" DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER_TCP_PORT_6000_OPEN="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN="" # DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN is empty. There you have it - "kdm" is for KDE 3's kdm, "kdm4" is the one that I guess you want. Thanks Roger, Lars, Will, Sorry for the delay. Just got back from a 'family trip', not in any way to be confused with the term 'vacation.' The two are separate and distinct and in no way relate or resemble one another. :-) I'm glad to see I'm not crazy and there was a bit of a gotcha in the code. I'll hardwire everything for kdm4, confirm and report back. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Confirmed, The bug is in specifying 'kdm' as the displaymanager in sysconfig. While from 11.0 on, 'kdm' defaulted to kdm4 and to use kde3 kdm you had to manually specify kdm3, for some reason in 11.3 that logic was mucked up so that simply specifying 'kdm' defaulted to an empty-string being selected as the DM defaulting to the plain old xdm greeter. I have confirmed that specifying kdm4 explicitly will give you the kde4 kdm greeter. So for 11.3 the current state of things in sysconfig for specifying your display manager under /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager is as follows: kdm3 -> kde3 kdm & greeter kdm -> xdm & greeter kdm4 -> kde4 kdm & greeter So the code needs to be fixed so that 'kdm' gives you the 'kde4 kdm' as it has done since 11.0 up until now.... ** Added to: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?GoAheadAndLogIn=1&id=559872 -- David C.
