I have a Dell dim xps r400. The processor is upgraded to a 1.2G celeron and works great. But, I am maxed out on memory (384). I am considering a motherboard upgrade /w processor (AMD or Intel?) and >512M memory. Most of my devices, disks, modem, DVD/RW, and TV card are all recent, so I don't really want to get a new computer. Is on board sound sufficient ?? What about the graphics card? If anybody has done this, please help me get started in the right direction. My machine is a general workstation, internet, music, dvds and (java/c++) development but not a game machine. It needs to support XP and linux. Reliability and performance are more important than cost. Mike
Hello Suse experts, I am trying to compile netapplet for my wireless connection on my Suse Personal 9.1. I have found and installed all (I think) necessary devel rpms either from source or from rpmfind.net. (I know this sounds like I am cheap but I am just a poor student and also a Linux newbie). I am getting the following error and for the life of me I am unable to tell what the solution could be. Package libart-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libart-2.0.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable I have the following libs installed which I think are the ones necessary. libart_lgpl-devel-2.3.16-84 libart_lgpl-2.3.16-84 I have tried to do the following with little success. ./configure --includedir=/usr/lib/pkgconfig/ my libart-2.0.pc is in /usr/lib/pkgconfig. Any help/comments/suggestions that anyone can provide would be most appreciated. If I missing a library please let me know which one. My Google, Suse etc search has proved unuseful in solving this problem. Thanks Ganesh

I believe that you have the correct lib files. Have you done what was suggested, added the directory containing libart to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH variable??? I would try that. Thanks. I was not sure how to do that but I finally got it work past that point. now upon install it gives me this error: netapplet.c:931: error: `GTK_STOCK_DIALOG_AUTHENTICATION' undeclared (first use in this function) netapplet.c: In function `populate_popup_menu' I am using Suse 9.1 Personal With KDE 3.2.1 in case I forgot to add it earlier. Now I really have no idea as to what to do. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. Ganesh
netapplet.c:931: error: `GTK_STOCK_DIALOG_AUTHENTICATION' undeclared (first use in this function) netapplet.c: In function `populate_popup_menu'
That is defined in gtkstock.h which is part of gtk2-devel
I am using Suse 9.1 Personal With KDE 3.2.1 in case I forgot to add it earlier.
KDE has nothing to do with it, netapplet is written in GTK and uses GNOME libraries, it'll run on KDE, but having KDE makes no difference to building it.
Now I really have no idea as to what to do.
See my previous mail - APT will install all it's dependencies as well. Once it's installed, you need to also make sure that you start the 'netdaemon' service that it provides. -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org GNOME for SuSE: http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms
Thanks for the apt-get suggestion. I have downloaded and installed it
as the site mentions but if I enter:
apt-get install netapplet
using the sources.list from this URL:
http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms/suser-jogley.php
i get an error saying that netapplet not found. apt-get is new to me
and even after spending many hours on it I am unable to tell what I am
supposed to be doing. I have the package gtk2-devel installed but
still get the gtk_stock_dialog_authentication error if I compile.
I would appreciate any help that you can provide.
Thanks again
Ganesh

Make sure that you've uncommented the appropriate components - a # at the beginning of a line means it's a comment. apt-get update apt-get install netapplet -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org GNOME for SuSE: http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms

Thanks a lot for your help. I seem to have installed it and started the netdaemon as per this url http://support.novell.com/products/technicalpapers/tp10007.html. but my problems are not over. after logging back in i did not get an icon like the url says so i entered netapplet into a shell and this is my error: netapplet: error while loading shared libraries: netapplet: undefined symbol: gtk_icon_theme_get_default. Any suggestions as to how I can proceed? Thanks again Ganesh

Well, that's instructions for installing on SuSE 9.2, you said you have 9.1, so I'm not sure what you mean.
netapplet: error while loading shared libraries: netapplet: undefined symbol: gtk_icon_theme_get_default. Any suggestions as to how I can proceed?
Looks like you're missing a GTK+ library, or have the wrong version, or it's not in your loader path, but I don't have time right now to sort it. Btw, I read the list, please don't copy me as well as it. -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org GNOME for SuSE: http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms

Why compile it yourself? Install it by APT - it's in the usr-local-bin component. Look at http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms
Package libart-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libart-2.0.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable I have tried to do the following with little success. ./configure --includedir=/usr/lib/pkgconfig/ my libart-2.0.pc is in /usr/lib/pkgconfig.
What you want to do is: export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="$PKG_CONFIG_PATH:/usr/lib/pkgconfig" ./configure -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org GNOME for SuSE: http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms

Replacing a motherboard is not technically difficult. If I can do it most anyone can, but... there are lots of little gotchas. A few things to consider: 1. Most name brand boxes customize their cases and motherboards. You need to be sure the case accepts the standard post configuration. Also the case should have a removable panel around the rear connectors since it's unlikely the connectors will be in the identical places. 2. Chip manufacturers use different sockets for their CPUs. AMD even has the same CPU specs using different sockets. The board must accept the chip model and have the same socket/pin configuration. 3. All RAM is not created equal. If you plan on re-using any of your RAM be sure the board supports it. 4. Fortunately most PCI cards will work in any system. Older AGP video boards however, will not fit in the AGP 8x slots. If this is your1st mobo replacement go into it with the view that it's a learning experience and may take some experimenting to get it right. That said, there are few things as rewarding as building your own box. Just try not to brag about it too much to your friends... ;-) Jeff

Word of caution - Dell do not necessarily follow the rest of the world with regards to motherboard mounting. You may find a non-Dell board will not fit, and that some of the hardware does NOT match. We have had fun with power supplies (#80 from dell - #30 out side but will not actually fit!) so if you need a P4 connector on the power supply for one of the more powerful motherboards ... Dropping hardware to a second case may be more practical longer term ;) -- Lester Caine ----------------------------- L.S.Caine Electronic Services

Mike, Just my $.02 worth. Go 64 bit. That means AMD. Get the new PCI Express that is just coming out. Tremendous speed. I recently did this (just before the PCI Express board was available) Nevertheless, I am still very, very pleased with the performance. Go with the 939 pin socket for the AMD. Got to amandtech.com for all kinds of reviews on the hardware you are considering. Then go to Monarch and check out their "barebones" combos. (motherboard, cpu, ram) As cheap or cheaper than getting the individual components. Bob S. PS All your 32 bit applications will work just fine. Then when you upgrade the OS you can get the 64 bit version.
