I am trying to use my DVD drive for backups. Writing to DVD+RW disks with k3b works fine. Trying to do this a second time fails with input/output error. Trying with growisofs gives the following error message: /dev/hdd: "Current Write Speed" is 4.1x1385KBps. :-[ WRITE@LBA=0h failed with SK=5h/ASC=22h/ACQ=00h]: Input/output error :-( write failed: Input/output error Is this possible? Should I be using a different media type like DVD-RW? Is this a bug in k3b or growisofs? TIA, Jeffrey

I routinely overwrite DVD+RW media using k3b with no problems. When you report a problem like this, you should supply more information: - SuSE Linux release - Kernel version - K3b version

I have had similar problems trying to use DAR for backups. If I use a fresh DVD+RW things go fine. But trying to re-use them (even with a format) almost always gives me an error. So I've given up using DVD's for backup. 9.2 latest 9.2 kernel no k3b, just growisofs
Is that an issue with the media or the software or the devices? Ruben On Sun, May 08, 2005 at 09:59:15AM -0400, Bruce Marshall wrote:

If I knew that, I could probably find a solution but I don't think it is the hardware or the media... so that leaves the software. At one point I swapped out the writer (an LG SL DVD writer) for a new LG DL DVD (4163) but it didn't make any difference.

I'd suspect the media, or possibly the drive. I've been backing up to dvd with dar(daromizer) on several systems for a year now. No problems. And please don't top post. I am using Sony DVD+RW media, a brand listed as compatible by the DVD driver manufacturer, Plextor. I may try booting into Win2k to check device and/or media. Jeffrey
