I am preparing to install SUSE 9.1 Professional on a Fujitsu-Siemens N5010 laptop. I have been thru its Windoze Device Manager and recorded all the devices, IRQs, memory and IO ports, and so forth. Before I begin my installation, I'd like to collect the latest drivers and documentation concerning the devices in the laptop, so I have them handy (burned to CD) before I start the install. Hopefully, some kind souls on this mailing list can help me. I've been a Solaris-on-Sparc admin for about 10 years, but I'm relatively new to Linux-on-IA32. I am looking for the specific package/driver names that I need to download, and what specific versions of those packages/drivers I should get, for the devices listed below. I'm also looking for helpful "How To" documents for configuring the devices. Finally, if SUSE 9.1 Professional ships with the latest driver for the device, please let me know that (so I don't waste my time downloading something that's already in the distro). And if anyone can offer any pointers or known "gotcha!" situations involving SUSE 9.1 Pro on this particular hardware, that would be helpful (linux-on-laptops.com doesn't really have much). The device list: 1) Texas Instruments OHCI-Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller 2) Alps Electric Pointing Device 3) Agere Systems AC'97 Modem 4) Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter 5) RealTek RTL 8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC 6) Texas Instruments PCI xx20 Integrated Flash Media 7) Sigmatel C-Major Audio 8) Fujitsu FUJ02B1 9) SiS Accelerated Graphics Port 10) SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller 11) ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 display adapter 12) Toshiba SDR6112F DVD/CD R/W Thank you for your assistance.

You want all the drivers before you start? Where's your sense of adventure? ;-) Unlike a Windows distro, Linux distros generally come with just about every driver included. Some drivers, such as video and printer, may not have all the functionality of their Windows counterparts, but if they are stable then they should be in the distro. Unfortunately many are 3rd party drivers so searching the manufacturer's site is often disappointing. I can say from experience that the Radeon and Realtek NIC will work with the drivers in the distro so you can check those 2 off. Jeff
I have an Alienware Area-51 laptop running Suse 9.1 Professional and it has the same ATI Mobility 9600 display adapter. The SuSe supplied Radeon driver worked well in X even allowing me to run at 1600x1200. I did however download and install (with some minor issues) the ATI fglrx driver to enable 3D support for this card. I had an issue with the module for my AGP chip kernel module sis_agp with the supplied kernel that was preventing the ATI driver from working. I upgraded to kernel 2.8.1 and it now works well... I still can't play some of the games I want (Unreal Tournament, Doom 3 etc) but rumors have it that ATI is working on a remedy to that soon. As was noted earlier.. I would imagine that SuSe will install flawlessly on your laptop. I was pleasantly surprised to have everything work upon the initial boot. A much better experience than I had with Red Hat. Good luck! Scott On Fri, 2004-10-15 at 13:35, David Bank wrote:

Someday I will play these games on my x86_64 and Radeon... someday... <sigh> Jeff

/snip/ I wonder if you might not want to wait roughly 3 weeks and get ver. 9.2, before going to all the trouble of getting drivers for 9.1. Just a thought. --doug

Another thing to possibly try -- Go grab the ISO for the SuSE 9.1 "live" trial CD. If it all works from that, there's a good chance it'll work from the 9.1 Pro discs themselves. Steve
