** I'm not as good as I was once, but I am as good once as I ever was.. "A nasty bit of rough" by David Feherty ** hiyas guys and gals, this is in the line of inquiry "do I want to get involved in this, or not"? IS anyone running the 2.6 kernal, from the suse 9.0 disks ? And, have you noticed anything specifically good or bad about it ? I *think* I should be able to install it along w/ the default 2.4.x .x etc. At least I think that is how we were able to play around w/ ( tinker w/, test , etc.) 2.4 when it came out but wasn't deemed stable enough to use for a production box... I am looking forward to the 2.6 kernal as many reports seem to indicate that things that make the penguins work even better , faster and w/ more muscle are included in it. I'd really like to hear any reports from someone who actually has the thing running and can make a comparison between the two kernals . TIA y'all -- j nemo me impune lacesset wwEd it's just an afterthought; okay ? : Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don't.

Personally, if you have ANY custom compiled drivers. Stay away from 2.6 right now. Im in a mixed boat where i've migrated my simple machines to 2.6 and I'm also staying away from it on my main box. For the simple server machines I've migrated, it works great. It has a streamlined config and build process. The new menus feel a bit strange at first, but all in all its cool to play with. As for more muscle, eh, maybe others will disagree, but I haven't felt like its given me any super-duper amount of improvement. Its a great step forward for features, and sure its got some neat vm and scheduling improvements, but nothin i've noticed has "blown me away" OTOH, I'm staying away from it until maybe 2.6.2 or 2.6.4ish on my main box because I have modules and software that is too closely tied to the 2.4 tree and hasn't been tested to work with 2.6 yet. SPecifically some DRM modules, alsa, VMWare, BTTV driver, lm-sensors and i2c... et. al. Im sure some of these are in 2.6, but for me to hassle with all of them now is not something I want to do for my main box. BTW, you NEED to use the new modules-init package to work with it. SuSE doesnt seem to have a problem with it so maybe they switched a long time ago, but the Redhat box I migrated to 2.6 didn't want to play until I upgraded modutils to modules-init-tools. Something to keep in mind. As you can see, currently I see it from both sides. My opinion is you should download it and try it. Compile it run it, give it a shot. If too many things break, give it a little time and come back to it. It's worth the wait. P.S. My server boxes are mostly SuSE 8.2 modified to use minit instead of sysvinit, currently use 2.6.0-test11 One stray redhat 9.0 box that runs 2.6.0 My main box is SuSE 8.2 Pro holding fast w/ 2.4.23 kernel. ------------------------- Eric Bambach Eric at cisu dot net -------------------------

Right now I have release 2.6.0 from kraxel and it works great. DRM Alsa VMware and bttv are running without problem. No need to upgrade modutils or mkinitrd with SuSE 9.0. I only got difficulties which are solved with swap partition on SCSI disks, no problem with IDE.
