[opensuse] On the fly addition of RAID 1 to a "live" system

I'm pretty sure there is but I'm asking to make sure .. I have a live system on sda and currently using rsync to backup to sdb (identical size disk). Also all partitions - including root and boot - are running reiserfs Can I add RAID 1 on the fly without disturbing my live system ? If so, can it be guaranteed ? And, could I be pointed to a procedure ? Probably not, you will likely find enough differences that your second drive will have to be whiped and then it can be added to your first drive and the system will rebuild it.
If so, can it be guaranteed ? And, could I be pointed to a procedure ?
Guaranteed? Comeon!!! Who's going to guarantee that? Your best and safest method is to create a new raid with new matched disks, and then populate it with your old data structures. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Notice that your current procedure is safer than raid.

I can think of a method, but I can not guarantee that it works. First you create a degraded raid 1 on the second disk. You copy everything there. Then you repartition the first as raid, and add it. Suggest you create a virtual machine to develop the procedure. Much safer to create a full backup and reinstall. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Thank you John & Carlos, I sounds like I'll just stay with using rsync for now Duaine On 10/28/2011 07:56 PM, Carlos E. R. wrote:
