[opensuse] ATI graphics drivers
I am considering purchasing a new laptop (the old T21 havng died), and am collecting information on required drivers. The openSuSE page on graphics drivers tells me that my video card (Intel Integrated GMA 4500MHD) would work if I install an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 driver, v8.40.4. A visit to the ATI driver site shows me that the information given above is not complete, because Radeon has a raft of drivers for notebook Linux machines, according to card type. The list includes a number of "Mobility Radeon Xnnnn" drivers, where "nnn" is a three or four digit number, but there is no entry for X1150. I assume that the X means "Xpress", but have no idea which listed type will work with the machine. If somebody understands ATI nomenclature sufficiently, I would like to know which type is sufficiently close to 1150 to use in the machine of interest. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Which laptop are you looking at? The 1150 driver should work, but if I knew the make and model of laptop I might be able to decifer the code.. I am looking at Dell Vostro 1014. I imagine that the 1150 v8.40.4 driver should work, because that is what is called out the openSuSE compatibility pages. My point (see above) is that the 1150 is missing from the ATI driver site. Since the Vostro is a relatively new line, it cannot be that the driver is obsolete and unsupported. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I just looked it up, and unfortunately it isn't an ATI graphics card. It's a new intel graphics model. I don't know if it's supported in 3d or not. Sorry.. Do not buy anything with ATI in it. The 8.40.4 ATI driver is ancient history and AMD no longer supports any card earlier than the 2400 series. Intel has been a disaster with 11.1. (works OK with other distros) Bottom line, spend the relatively small extra $ and buy something with nvidia inside ;-) HP maybe? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. The ATI driver came up because the openSuSE compatibility page said, without explanation, that the ATI driver was necessary. I had not noticed that the really tiny print in the web page about the prospective computer says that the machine is equipped with GMA 4500MHD graphics card, so it requires the corresponding Intel driver. Fortunately Mike, who has either better eyes or larger fonts, noticed that ATI is not what to look for. Hopefully, tomorrow I will find the right driver to d/l from one of Intels jungle of websites, and then order the machine, before the US$ evaporates completely. As far as I have ever been able to tell, machines advertised in this country are what they are, so to speak. If the picture says it has GMA 4500MHD graphics card, that's what it has; there aren't the customization options you have in the US. You don't often see machines with NVidia cards. But in the past, I have been very happy with Intel hardware. I am using oS v11,1 on an Intel 915GAV mother board on my desktop machine, with great satisfaction. No disaster here so far.
Bottom line, spend the relatively small extra $ and buy something with nvidia inside ;-) HP maybe?

What's puzzled me reading this thread is that nobody has commented on this apparent conflict. Stan said initially that the machine had Intel graphics and three times has said that the "openSuSE compatibility page" said an ATI driver was required, but he's consistently not given a URL. So is it the case that there is an opensuse page somewhere that has an incorrect driver information or not? The only conflict was in the depth of my ignorance. The specs in the advertisement did call out the GMS graphics card, and I saw that. The oS compatibility page for the same machine said very clearly that the ATI driver was required for Linux installation, and I did not know enough about the card for a warning light to flash in my head, so I accepted what the oS site told me, without further question. I apologize for my confused query, and for barking up the wrong shin. I also am glad for the delay in purchasing that my error caused. In the meantime, I found the same machine, but with Free DOS instead of the preinstalled Vista junk, therefore with a considerable improvement in price. As the saying goes, sometimes it pays to be ignorant. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You still haven't told us exactly which page this is! Despite me giving you a strong hint. Please give the URL for this page, so others can check it. Regards, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I didn't tell because nobody asked for it, and I was not asking for the page to be inspected, because it seemed quite clear . You can see the page at <http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Laptops/Dell#Vostro>; see the first entry. Evidently, at the time the entry was posted, the Vostro line was using Radeon graphic cards, and there was no need to mention what the card was. It doesn't any more. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
