[SuSE Linux] 30 or 72 pins???
Hi All; I was about to order 4Mb Ram chips yesterday when the order taker asked me which I wanted 30 or 72 pin chips..... Well, I don't know. Can anyone tell me how to tell which I need? I have a "OPTI-486WB" motherboard that was made in 1992. It has 8 slots with 1MB chips in each now. Looking in the manual, one place it refers to the chips as "4MB SIM DRAM", another says "4M x 9 OF SIM" and yet another says "4M x 9,4 pcs". No where does it say anything about pins. TIA! You can usually tell by the length of the chips or slots, but since you don't have both to compare the lengths against that won't really help. Judging by your description above though, I would say that you are currently using 30pin chips which are about 1.5" shorter then 72pin chips. -- S.Toms - tomas@primenet.com - <A HREF="http://www.primenet.com/~tomas</A">http://www.primenet.com/~tomas</A> S.u.S.E. Whoh!!!!!!! 30 pin simms are almost obsolete. 72 pin simms are getting there. The new standard are pc-100 compliant dimms. Look at your motherboard manual, you may need 30 pin, but they should be dirt cheap. 30 pins simms are about 2.5 inches long ; and 72 pin simms are about 4 inches long. Look at the slots on your motherboard. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

do you think it's worth the price? One can find second hand pentium motherboard (i have got 3 (!) recently to update my family's computers) for as few as the price of two 4Mb chips! be aware that ram chip has the same price whenever capacity they have (4Mb, 16Mb, 32 Mb are nearly the same price). The only one cheep is the most available, for now sdram. -- Linux hp-41 APTEP SF <A HREF="http://perso.club-internet.fr/jdanield</A">http://perso.club-internet.fr/jdanield</A> jdanield@club-internet.fr jdanield@usa.net -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Although the account I use is a member of the dialouts group I can't use ppp-up from it. The reason is that the /etc/suseppp/options.generic file is created with only -rw------- permissions. Of course I can change this but each time suseconfig runs it sets the permissions back. No doubt it causes a security loophole to make this file's permissions -rw-r--r-- too. Have you installed the package xmix, then use it to switch the recording source to line in or cd? Maybe even try to reduce the mic input level to zero? -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
Dear James, I would also go for a new motherboard and processor. I don't know if you have looked into the prices but 30 pins rams are very expensive per Mbytes in comparison to a 72 pin or even a DIMM. Right now i would buy a new board including PC100 DIMMS. That will give you in RAm and processor a up to date system for some time. I wouldn't say for how long as the technology is moving very fast. Advice, if you buy a new board it's best to buy a good brand. That is because of support and bios upgrades. Regards, Joop Boonen. "James (Jim) Hatridge" wrote:
