Hi Dee, I also have a Creative labs AWE-64 sound card (not the Gold model). What is this 'OSS' , is it a SuSE utility package ? and where can I obtain this 'OSS'. Also, what are the pit-falls in using this 'OSS' to configure AWE-64 sound card. Thank you for you help in advance. Regards, -Chris
I have a AWE64 Gold w/4megs and using SuSE 5.2 and the latest from OSS it works flawlessly. It is a 16bit card not PCI and nothing special was needed. Send me mail if you need more help.

Hi Chris,
Well after the last post it sounds like some folks are finding some other good
ways to get the sound out of an AWE64. OSS is a commercial app for sound.
See it at <A HREF="http://www.4front-tech.com"><A HREF="http://www.4front-tech.com</A">http://www.4front-tech.com and there is a FREE version and the
commercial one available. One of the other users on the list has his
working without OSS though, so you might want to ask him.
See the e-mail below:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following the excellent advice I've received right here at
'suse-linux-e@suse.com':
I've re-compiled my kernel for sound, and using 'isapnp', I've got my
Creative Labs SoundBlaster AWE32 PnP soundcard working without using the
OSS driver. (this works for the newer AWE64's also, per testimonies)
The benefits are:
1) better sound
2) RealAudio 5.0 works flawlessly
The OSS driver is flawed as far as RealAudio 5.0 is concerned. For all
of the posters who have been suffering from the "it cuts out after only
about one second" RealAudio 5.0 syndrome, this is the answer!
Thanks to all who have helped me in these matters!!!!

Hia SuSE! I finally said good bye to OSS!! As OSS used to lock my system up when trying to play au's, mp3s, waves and midi... so good riddence! I dug deep into the HOWTO's for my soundblaster which is a SB-64Gold Awe And I got it working well enough for it to play au's and mp3s and audio cds so far ;) I am way happy..but unable to load soundbanks cause of two missing things.. But, I have two things which are missing from a cat /dev/sndstat: here is mine right now: warhammer:/home/hettar # cat /dev/sndstat Sound Driver:3.5.4-960630 (Mon Jun 15 04:31:50 PDT 1998 root, Linux warhammer 2.0.33 #1 Mon Jun 15 03:06:17 PDT 1998 i586 unknown) Kernel: Linux warhammer 2.0.33 #2 Mon Jun 15 04:32:41 PDT 1998 i586 Config options: 0 Installed drivers: Type 1: OPL-2/OPL-3 FM Type 2: Sound Blaster Type 7: SB MPU-401 Card config: Sound Blaster at 0x220 irq 5 drq 1,5 SB MPU-401 at 0x330 irq 5 drq 0 OPL-2/OPL-3 FM at 0x388 drq 0 Audio devices: 0: Sound Blaster 16 (4.16) Synth devices: 0: Yamaha OPL-3 <-missing 1:AWE32-0.4.2c (RAM512) Midi devices: 0: Sound Blaster 16 Timers: 0: System clock Mixers: 0: Sound Blaster <-missing 1:AWE32 Equalizer Now I have compiled the kernel with Additional low level drivers with AWE synth picked.. (I even upgraded suse's awedrv) once without upgrading and I have 1-1v of isapnptools which I edited the isapnp.conf (had problems here) ..I think this is where my problem is..but I'd like to know if anyone can help me here.. It seams I had to put in (VERIFYLD N) and it had a problem with one of the last IO neer the end under -->waveTable<-- which was ((IO 2 (BASE 0x0e20)) which I ended up leaveing out.. I am wondering how I can figure out what I can do about it.. please help Steve Udell hettar@teleport.com -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I got au's mods midis mp3 waves and audio cds working so far. Next is prob a plug in for netscape and real audio and then doom/quake/ whatever. Lets see, for mp3's useing amp-0.7.6Lets see, for au's useing hear sounds (from suse5.2 disks) Lets see, for midi's useing play midi-2.3-awe32.1.i386.rpm Lets see, for wave's waveplayer Lets see, for mods (was just a test) XMplayer (QT libs) amp was configured w/ "./configure --with-realtime" this is a console based mp3 player..works great.. 44khz 112k/s sample rate stereo Steven Udell hettar@teleport.com -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

This is dependent on what rate the encoder of the mp3 chooses. You can go up to 256 k/s. I usually use 128 k/s. For those of you that can't use cdda2wav to rip tracks because your cdrom isn't supported, check out cdparanoia. It works great on a lot of drives that cdda2wav bails on. If you are interested and can't find it on the web, mail me, I have a url somewhere around here. Steven Udell wrote:

I still like Playmidi for midi and Amp for mp3s. Both are console. X11amp is nice for mp3s in X, and it supports winamp skins now too. W.D.McKinney wrote:
