can't add DVD to the installation sources in 9.2
Dear list members: I have the following problem with DVD installation in SuSE linux 9.2 When I want to add DVD to the installation sources in YaST (YaST -> Software -> Change source of installation -> Software source media panel: Add -> DVD) I get the following error message: Unable to create installation source from URL 'dvd:///'. Details: ERROR(Media:mount failed) Try again? I have a CD-ROM drive and a DVD burner which were set up by yast (integrated into system) as cdrom and dvdrecorder, but I do not have a regular DVD-ROM. I am using subfs with automount. This works fine, after inserting a DVD or CD into any drive, the media is mounted and a konqueror window is also opened. What really strange is if I put an installation CD into the CDROM drive I can add this installation media to the install sources not only as CD but also as DVD. Any idea, what is going on here? Thanks, IG

Did you have the DVD in the drive when you were trying to add the DVD source? -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please* "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Yes, I had the DVD in the drive. But this thing becomes more and more weird. I updated KDE 3.3.2 to 3.4 in the meantime. After this I tried to add DVD to the installation sources again and it gave a different message that says: There is no product information available at the given location. If you expected to address a product, return back and enter the correct location. To make rpm packages located at the specified location available in the packages selection, continue. Clicking on continue resulted in addition the following line in the sources window: (status name url) on dvd://// dvd:/// (4 slashes) (3 slashes) This is strange since this is a 9.2 install dvd and it worked for me on other systems and also can be used to boot this system. Did you remove the original DVD source by mistake or is this an additional new drive? If you already have a DVD entry there is no need to add it again. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please* "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Hey, thanks! That is good to know. I just got me out of a situation I created by renaming my device links in /dev. Do I infer correctly from the plural ("devices") that one can include more than one device name after the equal sign? If so, do you know how? By using a comma-separated list, maybe? Where did you learn about this?

I haven't the foggiest, I'm afraid.

You know, I had tried to add media to an 9.0 FTP install and had a heck of a time, so I did a media install on another box, just to check the entry! -- __________ CorvusE Linux User #370082

But how or where can I modify this entry? In YaST I can add, edit, or delete. None of these accepts text as input. Thanks, IG
Where it came in handy for me was when I initiated an installation (after making my selections in YaST Install and Remove Software) and only then discovered that my renaming of the symlinks in /dev and /media had rendered the I&R module incapable of finding the installation source (the distribution DVD, in my case). When that happens, you get an error dialog telling you the required media could not be found. In that dialog you can indeed edit the "dvd:///" and change it to "dvd:///;devices=/dev/hdc". After that you can click Retry (I think it's Retry) and the installation proceeds successfully. Randall Schulz

Thank you, I will try this. But the problem was on another machine and I can get to it only in the weekend. Thanks, IG
