[S.u.S.E. Linux] YaST update problems
I installed the new yast update for SuSE 5.2 (version 0.89.3 I believe) which I found on the SuSE FTP site. To install I used the command: rpm -i --force yast.rpm It seems to have installed properly, and all functions appear to be working normally, yet every time I re-boot my system I get a message saying effectively that 'YaST appears to still have things to configure, so I will simply re-start it :), followed by YaST. This is getting a bit annoying. AFIKT there is nothing left to install, so is there a way to turn off this problem? Thank you, Lawrence Sayre <lsayre@integrityonline13.com> -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
I just updated by installing the rpm under yast, and then restarting yast. worked with no problems. -- Aaron Seelye <roberto@cbvcp.com> <A HREF="http://revolution.3-cities.com"><A HREF="http://revolution.3-cities.com</A">http://revolution.3-cities.com</A</A>> lsayre wrote:

If you're just updating, you might try a 'rpm -Uvh yast.rpm' and see if that does anything for you. Has anyone had any sucess installing AOL's instant messanger. Ala, Java version for Linux with a filename of aim_linux.sh? I keep getting no permission when running it, even as root. Running v5.1 here btw. I wouldn't even bother with this software if it wasn't a request from my wife and sister-in-law. Or, if anyone has a "better" solution for a Win95 and 5.1 suse chatting, let me know. Btw, I think Speak Freely would work, except I can't figure out the linux command line end of things. I ran it on mine. It works fine. Did you check the permissions? It sounds obvious but...some apps (like fetchmail) you do have to set them manually...not just assume they are properly set at installation time -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

This is not going to help you much, but I have executed the aim shellscript install of AIM Java, and it worked without a flaw. It's not quite as nice as the win95 vertsion but I can chat with anybody and everybody who uses WIN etc. on there. What exactly is that "no permission" thing and when and where does it happen? The most obvious choice for chatting on diiferent platforms would either be TALK (although you'll have a difficult time finding a decent windows client for it), or irc. ICQ is also good but i hear their java version is seriously lagging in features compared to the win95 version. Hello everyone, First off, just wanted to say hi, since I haven't posted in a while and also pose a question. I run KDE 4 and have so with little or no problems. However, I am setting up the system sounds, and while the tests for certain sounds for certain actions work, KDM doesn't seem to register it afterwards. (for example, I set bla.wav to play everytime a new window opens..the test button will play the sound, however..after applying changes, the sound never comes up). I don't think it is a sound driver/card problem, since KMedia will play all my sounds..and I can record. Has anyone got teh system sounds working? thanks, Steven "Svet" Bird-Downum -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Check the "buglist" at KDE. Steven 'Svet' Downum wrote:

We had this discussion a few days back. The solution is: Let it run and see what happens. If you run it overnight and next day there is no change, stop it the hard way: remove rm /usr/lib/YaST/.configured2 and enjoy a peaceful, quite system ! Jürgen,
This solution is helpful as a temporary measure. Unfortunately, this does not help those not in this list or are installing it for the first time. IMHO, SuSE should provide a fix for this annoyance in the next 6.0 release and also document it in their "sdb" with above workaround. Perhaps, their latest Yast version has solved this problem. -- Arun Khan -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

did you try --upgrade instead of -i and --force options? It should have worked as well. If not, pls. report the bug to SuSE.

I absolutely agree with you on this one. It does this after a fresh install as well and from what I have seen it goes away after I have rebooted the machine a 2-3 times. During these times it also seems Suseconfig is running in the background. Looked thru the handbook and could not find anything on this. With Linux installations I am getting exposed to Sysadmin and begining to dislike seeing processes that cannot be explained. I hope SuSE will fix this in their next release. -- Arun Khan -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

There are a lot of perl scripts that yast runs in the background after you do a fresh install/update... The reason yast keeps running is because the perl scripts haven't finished configuring the things it needs to... I believe on console 9 (ALT-F9) that you'll see what it is doing... You must let this run until you get the message finished at the end, then yast won't start when you boot you computer next... It says this somewhere either during the install or in the manual... Hey guys in 5.2 Yast does tell you after an install that it will be running the configuration scripts and to view the status switch to virtual window xx. If you let the processes finish before rebooting, you wouldn't have it starting up 2-3 times. Before 5.2, you had no warning these scripts where running, except of course the humm from your disk drive!! Lach Arun K. Khan wrote:

What is new in the newest YaST. I am using 0.89.11. I am wondering it the changes are significant enough to bother. I don't recall seeing anything in the changelog. lsayre wrote:
