RE: [SLE] Major problems suse pro 9.3 w/samba 3.0.13
I just upgraded a file server from suse pro 7.3 with samba 2.2 to suse
9.3 with samba 3.0.13 and I have major problems.
Actually did a clean install, leaving the old home directory alone. Did backup all important data and made copies of the smb.conf file and other files.
The enfironment is an office with the suse server, and windows xp home workstations. The server is a Dell GX110, PIII (don't remember the speed, about 733 MHz), 256 MB RAM.
This system was working fine with Suse 7.3, but I figured a newer kernel and updated security would be better for now and the future.
The windows systems (XP Home, sp2) cannot get access to the server. After invoking My Network Places, and clicking on the "view workgroup" selection, the system shows up. But clicking on it gets an error message saying
user doesn't have access rights.
I checked, rechecked, and checked again the user rights for the users,
Yeah -- the default firewall rules killed me for a while. _Everything_ is blocked. Including, for example, SSH, so I'd assume that Samba is on that list. Try doing `/etc/init.d/SuSE-firewall stop` (I may have the name of the service wrong, but it's something like that). Then, do `iptables -F`. See if that works for you.... -----Original Message----- From: Brad Bourn [mailto:brad@summitrd.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 26, 2005 10:46 AM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] Major problems suse pro 9.3 w/samba 3.0.13 Firewall maybe? entered, blew away, then reentered the smbpasswd info. No joy.
So, I need to get up in a few hours and get to the client's office at bout 7AM and hope I can get this thing running again before the office opens.
Anyone have any ideas about this? I'm going to try and get a few hours sleep and get back to it early. Any help is appreciated.

Stopping the firewall altogether may be a quick way of finding out if the firewall is in fact the problem, use yast to stop the firewall and remove it from the boot up sequence. Then try again, I have found that when using pam_smb to auth one needs to specify the "auth server" name on the login string so something like server\user then type the password. Double clicking the share you are trying to access prompts for login. Also make sure that if the SMB server is not a PDC that it's in the PDC's workgroup. If there is no PDC then make the SMB server a PDC ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marlier, Ian" <ian.marlier@studentuniverse.com> To: <brad@summitrd.com>; <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 26, 2005 4:46 PM Subject: RE: [SLE] Major problems suse pro 9.3 w/samba 3.0.13 Yeah -- the default firewall rules killed me for a while. _Everything_ is blocked.
