Hi *, How do I upgrade from 7.3 to 8.1 by using ftp (or YAST or YOU)??? I don't have a clue which one to use - and how and what updates the Base system and what kde???. Generally: Would you recommend an new installation via ftp (how long would this take using TDSL?) or an update of the existing system? I upgraded my 7.3/kde 2 installation with the kde303 packages ("manually"; some difficulties and now everything is messed up between kde 2 and kde 3 folders and apps :-() and thought about upgrading the whole base system. Any help/comments are appreciated Cheers Ian

I would definately recommend a clean install - not an upgrade. When I made an ftp install of 8.0 on my 256Kbit ADSL, I started it before I went to bed, and it had finished downloading when I got up 6 hours later. My package selection is a bit larger than the default. The installer had made a guesstimate of 50+ hours, so I didn't wait up for it. How long it will take for you will depend on the speed of your line, the speed of the ftp-mirror (don't use SuSE's own site), your package selection, and possibly the speed of your computer. Regards Ole
Hi Ole, thanks for replying. So your recommendation is: - Get the ISO-Immage on the CD - Boot with the CD - Make a clean install by, -- pointing to a mirror site (which directory?) [Q] Do you think Yast will recognize my internal modem of my Laptop (IBM T20)? [Q] Can I configure the modem and TDSL parameters in yast at installation time (when the machine is booted by the ISO-Image) [Q] Have you ever used APT for further maintanace of your system? Mirrors with directoriy names are listed at: http://www.suse.de/en/private/download/ftp/int_mirrors.html

I have no idea for these two, as they depend on the make and model of the modem, and how your TDSL is set up.
[Q] Have you ever used APT for further maintanace of your system?
Yes, I am currently using apt. When I get around to it, I will duplicate my installation to another partition and try a dist-upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1. Regards Ole
