[opensuse] WD MyCloud on Linux?
Got a WD MyCloud (4TB) backup device for the wife/daughter to use with Windows. WD does not seem to offer any support for Linux, only Windows and Mac. Does anyone have suggestions how I could use this device with Linux (OS 13.1-KDE)? Would I need to create a samba share? Love this device!

The MyCloud, when accessed via the webportal allows you to turn on SSH and FTP. I use a dns forwarder and various sftp sync tools to keep my files synced when out on the road. When you're on your local network, the MyCloud device is already set up to share each user directories, you simply need to mount the shares. Hope that helps, Garheade

The SSH is of no use. Its a management interface (which oddly, voids your warranty), and it does not provide any backup or file access features at all, No FISH, no SFTP. The Web portal can be used to set up ftp, and NFS and, or course SMB. All of those protocols can be used with OpenSuse and KDE. For casual use, I just use the "Network" location in Dolphin, and add a destination with a link like smb://192.168.2.74/NORNAS/ The basic file system on the MyCloud will not preserve permissions of files you copy over there, but it is good enough for casual storage just like any other Samba Server. For Backups, I enable the NFS feature on the MyCloud, then I run a script to mount it (as root). Something like mount -t nfs 192.168.2.74:/nfs/NORNAS /mnt Then I use a backup tool which preserves permissions etc, so that upon restore things just work right without any fiddling with a million permissions. (I've been using BRU http://www.tolisgroup.com/ a commercial package that I've licensed since the end of the pleistocene. But there are lots of tools you can use for that). - -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iEYEARECAAYFAlUHNw8ACgkQv7M3G5+2DLJv9wCZAYNyK3/qMFc6xSt0Vb1RFr9A F3wAn0m7T4iC5DcNtrCxGIZjUfGfO5Ij =Ou3Q -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
