Firefox refuses to open some links, some times.
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Firefox refuses to open some links, some times. I try to open this link I got on an email - it happens with several sites, this is just an example. https://youtu.be/qkZDn9O954U Nothing opens. I close the tab, open another tab, try again. I get a popup - see attached photo. If I clicl on "open with firefox", then I get the youtube page, but the video doesn't load - after all, it is a local file "file:///tmp/mozilla_cer0/watch" of html type. After opening a new tab several times and pasting the link, finally it opens. I am using UBlock, but also happens with Add Block Plus, or if I click disable on the current page. Most times it simply works, but a few times I hit a link that FF simply refuses to open, no message. Using Leap 15.2 and stock FF. - -- Cheers Carlos E. R. What you mean with stock FF? The openSUSE 15.2 stock or the Mozilla stock? I'm using the openSUSE 15.2 78.11.0esr with uBlock Origin and never saw this issue. Are you sure you don't have any YT plugin or any other plugin handling special content-types and does this not consistently? Maybe have a look at the Web Developer Tools network tab (F12) to see what is received when there is the download dialog.

No, I don't have any such, and it is not only youtube.

I have the file saved on /tmp. 916KB. Tells me nothing. Say I click on a link to open on a new tab; new tab opens but blank. I create new tab, paste the link, this time works, the link opens. Some times it does not. There are two or three variants of the problem. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Sorry, but what file are you referring to? Can you make it public? If nothing happens, how can it be 916 KB?

Can you be more explicit about what the variants are? Rather than being a problem with FF, is it possibly a problem with your MUA, Blunderbird? Or the XDG mechanism? Does the problem occur if you click on links in any other application? (e.g. libreOffice) Have you tried with FF in safe mode? Does the problem occur then?

Described on the first post. I get a popup about opening a local file instead of opening the site in a tab. I can not upload the file because restarting FF erased it, sorry.

It happens even if I paste or type the link into a new tab in firefox. Randomly. This morning, one paste would fail, the second would work.
Have you tried with FF in safe mode? Does the problem occur then?
Just now I tried to open https://meet.opensuse.org, it would simply not open. I tried on new tab, on new window. Nothing would open, not even the home page. I simply got a blank page with the tab signalling that it was loading or waiting, but nothing happened. I had to restart Firefox, and now things open. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I'll try next time it happens.
For example, I paste on a new tab: https://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.3/live/ I get a prompt to open a file with external app, or save. I cancelled (I have another file). I hit enter on the url entry again. No response. I open another tab, and paste the same URL, still on the clipboard. It opens just fine. Or I have a list of links on an email in this links, just screenshots from Wolfgang Mueller. I click on all of them on sucession. One of them fails. I copy the URL from that failed tab, close the tab, open another tab, paste the link, it works. Or I read an email, I need to see the list archive, I display the headers: List-Archive: https://listi.jpberlin.de/pipermail/smartmontools-support/ I select the link and copy to clipboard: https://listi.jpberlin.de/pipermail/smartmontools-support/ I paste that into a new tab and hit enter. I get a prompt, see attached photo. I cancel the prompt. I open a new tab, I paste the same url, still in the clipboard, and hit enter. It opens normally. I just tried to open the file in question with firefox, to recover the name - firefox locked. I had to kill it. File is: -rw-r--r-- 1 cer users 21532 Jul 7 13:10 NADjO27t.html cer@Telcontar:~/Downloads/Firefox_downloads> Here you have it: https://susepaste.org/37690069 It is simply the webpage it should have displayed. Nothing strange, but I don't speak html. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)

The download dialog is only opened in a "default browser" if the content-type of the server response is not known to be shown in browser dom. Something like application/binary and many more, but not text/html, which it should be. Also have a look what is happening with the HTML5 video stream. Maybe there is a culprit. I'd have a look at the HTTP headers of the response to get an idea what is happening exactly. Also a MITM-proxy would make sense to trace the network-traffic (which is other wise TLS secured). But you have to know about doing this stuff. What is in the file? Have a look at it in shell file <filename> and head -10 <filename> and also a hextool for binaries like xxd -l 200 <filename> Every non-text file has some special header at the beginning if it is no trash. If the console is garbled afterward the head command, type blindly reset and press enter.

Yeah, palemoon doesn't like it either. Has some fancy redirects at the beginning to, but all I can see are from: https://youtu.be/qkZDn9O954U -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkZDn9O954U&feature=youtu.be then: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul -> https://youtu.be/qkZDn9O954U Then an alert popup from intersite blocker, request-policy, which can't handle a self-mutating domain name very well so puts up an alert popup: ALERT: Pale Moon can't find the file at https://youtube/qkZDn9O954U It tries to jump to Youtube, but first tried to display 3 adverts with different domains..., so intersite blocker request-policy sorta keels over w/Alert popup: Pale Moon can't find the file at https://youtube/qkZDn9O954U Tried looking in debugger and got some error in response headers with: CP="This is not a P3P policy! See http://support.google.com/accounts/answer/151657?hl=en for more info." If I disable intersite access control (Request Policy) completely, I see a barrage of video jumps+redirects until it gets to a main chinese talkonaught video, where the player promptly keels over. It opened, though slowly in Opera and MS Edge. Think problem is slow DNS resolution as it tries to jump you through a few-several adverts from different countries -- maybe to find a better speed mirror? Of course final outcome from youtoob is it hangs trying to play main video, telling me an error occurred, Please try again later, Playback ID: gobbledeguk: Learn More -- click on that and says: "We could not load help."... end of story. Yeah, google-tube is generating less friendly htm...

This may happen, for example, if you visit websites with Google +1 buttons. Some browsers require third party cookies to use the P3P protocol https://www.w3.org/P3P/ to state their privacy practices. However, the P3P protocol was not designed with situations like these in mind. Works for me in Seamonkey. becomes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkZDn9O954U You can cheat on this behavior by using https://www.youtubepp.com/watch?v=qkZDn9O954U This turns into a download and also bypasses the ad. -- Carl Spitzer ___ _ / (_) | | () o | __, ,_ | | /\ _ _|_ __ _ ,_ | / | / | |/ / \|/ \_| | / / _|/ / | \___/\_/|_/ |_/|__/ /(__/|__/ |_/|_/ /_/ |__/ |_/ /| /| \| \| Democrat is SIN and TREASON ____________________________________________________________ Choose to be safer online.
