I just replaced my old video card with a Radeon 9000(not a pro). But I'm having some trouble setting it up for 3D. It seems to work, but something isn't quite right. On gears I get 320 fps full screen(2100 small screen), compared to 100 with 3d off. But on tux racer i get this odd rolling wave where the tracks should be. SAX recognizes it as a ATI rv250 lf, is this the right choice for this card? It uses the radeon driver, but from my search through the archives I thought it would be the ati driver. Any help in getting this to work would be greatly appreciated. I checked the ati site and the only drivers were for XFree 4.1 and 4.2. I assume it would be a bad idea to install these on 8.2, or would this be fine? TIA

I haven't actually tried it because I'm to busy to go get the new ATI card I was thinking of buying, but it was discussed that the 8500 though 9500 work quite well with this driver because the FireGL uses the same chipset. I guess I'm already through this with my radeon. I've upgraded X 4.2 to 4.3 (running 8.1) using SuSE rpms and 3D didn't work, I was getting ~ 300fps at most. I've downloaded 4.3 drivers from here http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=12629 and now it works fine, I'm getting up to 3000fps. I have posted question earlier today what would be good procedure to install them but as nobody replied yet I tried myself and it worked out fine. Martin --- Tom Emerson <osnut@pacbell.net> wrote:

Martin, Which card are you using? 3000 fps for the full window gears? or the small window? Do you have radeon or ati as the driver?
I believe I have ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] and I got up 3k fps in small window ... more-less I don't care how much glxgears shows, important thing is drm is working now and was not when I had driver from SuSE XFree86 4.3 upgrade. Would be nice to know why but my expertise is not enough to find out. The driver I've just installed should be ati.2. Martin --- Nebbish <nebbish@sprynet.com> wrote:

My apologies if this sounded a little harsher than intended -- if indeed ATI has 4.3 drivers on their site, this has happened in the last 24 hours and I wasn't aware of it.

in the next message, "Dep" pointed out a german site that has the file you're talking about, however that isn't ATI's site [so far as I can tell] and as I've pointed out above, a search of ATI's site wouldn't have found a 4.3 version [please don't take this personally -- I'm just pointing out "what I know" of the situation -- I was unaware of this "other" version of the driver] I too have a 128mb "9000", though it falls under the category of "powered by" rather than "built by" [call me finicky, but for certain components I do like to stick with a "name brand"; in this case I was "convinced" that "3rd party products are just as good", and then suitably cheesed-off when ATI's "official" driver refused to operate with a "powered by" card...] While I've been writing this response, I've just downloaded the glx1 file you mentioned, so I'd like to know how well it is working for you before I take a shot at it [and in particular, is the "9000" card you have "powered by" or "built by"? Thanks Ben, dep, Tom and Martin but I had no luck with either option. I ran into the same dead end as dep (needing fglrx-glibc22-X43.tgz). It also seemed to me that recompiling the kernel might be needed, which is still a bit over my head. Martin your track failed miserably. My fps dropped to 100 small and 15 full. So I reverted back to my original setup. But it might have been my tinkerings not the packages ... I'm not sure if this will help anyone but when i tried to revert back to the original config, my fps didn't go back to where they were. Luckily I remembered that i had disabled AGP top performance and AGP fast write in the bios. After enabling these my fps were back to where they were when i starrted. Well at least it doesn't crash like it did with my old card, and at least the frequency goes high enough where I don't get light headed minutes after sitting down at the computer. I guess I should enjoy what
