[S.u.S.E. Linux] Web database
I'll start right out and admit I am a dreaded newbie. I get PAID to program Accounting Apps for that other OS using Visual Basic. I wrote a database for a local non-profit organization using an Access DB. They would like to put it on the Web. Since the local ISP uses Linux I needed to make it a Linux DB. I found information on Qddb, a Linux Db that did CGI, and bought it. Unfortunately it interfaces with Tcl. At this stage in my life, I have no desire to learn a new language, especially one as obtuse as Tcl. I read a little out of a Tcl primer but it seemed to be written in some obscure Mespotanian dialect. :) Does anyone on this list know of a DB App under Linux that would allow querying and maintaining an Access Db over the Web from Linux? The only other choice is to pay(yech) a Tcl guru to write the necessary script but the n-p doesn't have the money. Uh, time to figure out SQL and give Postgres a try, very solid, and the price is right, FREE!!!! I don't think that you'll find much of anything that supports M$ access in Linux land. Jim, How about move the Access DB to Adabas. The users could access the database from the web using your access forms already developed. This mean users accessing your web site would need your access forms on their system. (The users first act could be to download the forms). Adabas is not free!!! But there again very few first class products are. The folks at SuSE in California can set you up. As far as tcl goes, it's a tool worth learning. As is Perl. Perl has a tcl extensions modules called Perl/Tk. I think the guys at Qddb are working towards getting a Perl/Tk version out. One of the benefits of Perl/Tk is that your apps are cross platform (windozs and Unix, one day the Mac). Hi, although I havn't done it; I've seen others talk about doing it with the Perl language and the various SQL and database modules available for Perl. If you are interested, why don't you post this question to comp.languages.perl and see if they can point you to someone who has done it. The Perl experts there are awesome. There are free perl scripts out there to do almost anything. I'm sure there is something for ACCESS. zentara -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Jim, Beware the Perl newsgroups are tough!!! Read all the Faq's before posting a question, the flames are hot :)) Lach zentara wrote:

Hello world, people say that the NFS drivers has been completely rewritten for 2.1.xx kernel. Now I'm looking for a stable (the most stable) version of those kernels. The requirements are very limited: I use SCSI 78xx adapter, basic sound chip, 3c905 (3c916) network card and a PS2 mouse. However I am primarly concerned with the NFS speed. What would be the best bet among those 2.1.xx kernels? Thnx, Anatoli -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I use KDE beta 3 with suse 5.1 distribution. I have a network PS printer and I can print using lpr command. Though I cannot print directly from Netscape or Kedit or whatever. Looks like there is a variable to be defined. When I try to set my printer preferences (it is defined as lD209) with Kjet tool the printer name returns to "lp" when I close Kjet. Hi Jim, there are Databases available for Linux which have a Web-Interface ! That means, you don't have to write something in 'mesopotamien' language etc. - you just put the requests into HTML, that's it on the WWW side. On the input side, where you want to feed the stuff into the web database, you have to find a solution of exporting the content of the AccessDB and transfer it into the webDB. Prof. Databases running on Linux, costing some money, but have support and have something to be accessed from MS-Windows, are: LNX, Adabas, Empress, etc. many of them have a web interface, some an ODBC-interface. To use a Database for free can be much more work and trouble, if you don't have already experience with that. I dunno how much data you want to feed in the beginning and how much data it will be periodically. Your strategy depends somewhat on such issues. 1. Maybe you first want to have a Linux machine beside the Windows machine to get familiar with the ness. procedures. Then you can connect this Linux box with the Server at the ISP over the Internet and transfer data 1:1 using web interface. OR: 2. You write an Access-Basic Script to export data from AccessDB over TCP/IP while connecting to the target Linux box. First in one room, later over Internet. (Hopefully MS-Access Basic supports TCP/IP...) All these procedures you can write and test in your office - the difference later is just to go over the Internet (and speed of course). After you got familiar with the technics, it's not that difficult. Look on the SuSE site for more information on Databases. <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/</A">http://www.suse.com/</A</A>> <A HREF="http://www.suse.de/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.de/</A">http://www.suse.de/</A</A>> My personal choice was LNX, because: - Web interface in HTML tags ! - C interface for fast data input (feed) - ODBC interfaces for Windows 3.1 / 95 / NT - ODBC interface for Linux/Unix - Java interface - Python interface (now build in) - ESQL/C interface - ANSI SQL - reasonable prize (much for the money) - more... Additionally take a look at MySQL.
