[opensuse] WiFi Card Problem
Last year, I plugged in a Ubiquiti PCI card under SuSE 10.2. It recognized the card as one using an Atheros driver. 10.3 does not recognize the card -- just that there is one. I plugged the card into my Dell Inspiron 8600 PCMCI slot, went to Yast2->Network Devices -> Network settings. The card was listed as unconfigured "because the kernel device is not present." How do I fix this? -- Best regards, Dennis J. Use madwifi. I think it's on the distro disks, but it's for sure on the community repos. http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories Dennis J. Tuchler wrote:

Thanks for the reference! I went there, found a large number of rpms and took the top one. I thought that it was in the 10.3 distro, as it was in the 10.2 distro, so I assumed that the message I got was not = driver missing. Rather, I thought there was something funny with the kernel.

I downloaded and installed madwifi-0.9.3.3-0.1.i586.rpm. Just to make sure, I rebooted and then went to the Network Settings page, only to find that the message was the same -- "the kernel device is not present". What does this mean? It means you don't have the correct module for your card, or it's not loaded. Thierry -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hmmm. You mean that the madwifi module I installed was wrong? Or that it was not properly installed? -- Best regards, Dennis J. the wiki gives detailed instructions (search for athereos). basically, you must setup packman as software reposititory and install the modules with yast jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I downloaded and installed the madwifi driver with yast2. I'll set up the packman repository and try that. Thanks. -- Best regards, Dennis J. I use the madwifi driver and it works like a charm. The ath_pci module must be loaded. Did you try inserting the ath_pci module with "modprobe -v ath_pci" ? -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. I tried modprobe -v ath_pci and got this answer: FATAL: Module ath_pci not found. So what did I load when I unwrapped madwifi-0.9.3.3-0.1.i586.rpm? -- Best regards, Dennis J.
