Dear all,

I'm getting the same message when trying to start the Mozilla which comes with 8.1. I have my own version of Mozilla in my home directory, which starts fine without that error message. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

The difference is in environment variable LD_ASSUME_KERNEL being set to 2.2.5 The errors are produced by this piece of code in /usr/X11R6/bin/mozilla: # export this temporarily - it seems to work with old and new # versions of the JVM. export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 # get the version JVM_VERSION=`$JVM_COMMAND -version 2>&1 | grep version | cut -f 3 -d " " | sed -e 's/\"//g'` unset LD_ASSUME_KERNEL case "$JVM_VERSION" in (1.3.0*) # bad JVM export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 ;; The setting is not needed if you are using Java 1.3.1 or 1.4 I am using Java 1.3.1, so I commented out export line in the script. Hello, I had the same problem with Limewire. Don't download and try to run the installer, just download the TGZ (or maybe tar.gz) file from LimeWire. Click on Other Installers and then linux on the next page. This file, when uncompressed, contains LimeWire as if you ran the script and told it to install in this folder. Hope this helps. The problem is related to the fact that the JVM included with 8.1 is still built with GCC 2.95.3... while the rest of the distro is built with GCC 3.2. This is a known issue with ZeroG (the install anywhere folks) and SuSE is working on Sun to get an updated Java build. - Herman Michael Sacco wrote:

Sorry, but this is plain wrong, as this has nothing to do with the compiler! The Java programmers just assumed a ridiculous small stack and Java can't cope with the floating stack in glibc.
This is a known issue with ZeroG (the install anywhere folks) and SuSE is working on Sun to get an updated Java build.
Once again, this is a bug in Java, which a rebuild won't fix. The rebuild would only make the java plugin work again, as Java's font manager is written in C++ and only C++ code is affected by the switch of compilers. These errors are caused by the use of LD_ASSUME_KERNEL in wrappers, which won't work with our glibc. As I wrote in the other mail the only solution is to get Java changed and in the meantime remove all those bogus uses of LD_ASSUME_KERNEL in wrapper scripts. No, the LimeWire folks try to work around a problem of Java on Linux (because the IBM/Sun java programmers just made wrong assumptions). That work-around only works on RedHat and even there it only blocks the usage of libpthread. On SuSE Linux you will get the problems you describe. Just to make it clear, the bug is in Java, not in our glibc! To make the installer work, search the following lines in LimeWireLinux.bin and delete them: # glibc floating stack problem on Linux if [ `uname -s` = Linux ] then case `uname -r` in 2.[456]*) LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL ;; esac fi Philipp -- Philipp Thomas work: pthomas@suse.de Development SuSE Linux AG private: pth@t-link.de
Hi, I just installed the latest version of LimeWire (2.6.5). You need to be in the current directory and run: sh runLime.sh. I created a Link on my desktop that runs the following: cd ~/LimeWire; sh runLime.sh And it works just fine. I am using SuSE 8.0 Professional with a Standard Java Install.
