Hi, My employer is willing to pay for broadband for me (on account of it being cheaper than ISDN) and I wanted to know if any of you have experience with this. I'm particularly interested in any experience you have with networking and broadband as I have a small network at home and want to give access to more than one machine. The ISP I am currently considering is Demon which happens to be cheap but more importantly offers a static IP ... they don't mind me networking across the connection but won't officially support it. I don't think they officially support Linux either which surprised me since I thought Demon was very alternative. The package is a self-install so I have to choose a modem and the one I am thinking of is the D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router with 4 Port 10/100 Switch available from Scan (www.scan.co.uk) ... it has firewall capability and port configurability which I take to mean I can set a specific IP port to allow access to a given server or service. Anyway ... I'm interested in anyones experiences in this area :-) James C. Rocks Equant Archway House Canary Wharf London E14 9SZ

I am using this router with BTOpenworld, and it works fine (I think it has been discontinued?) The only problem I had was during the initial installation, which was due to plugging it straight into the network that already had a DHCP server on it, and confusion happened. In the end I just connected a single PC to it with a 'hard coded' IP address, configured everything, then plugged the network in. The only other issue is that driver/firmware upgrades have to be done from a Windows machine. I have also heard good reports about the Vigor 2600 Router. Merry Xmas All. Before buying, I'd suggest perusing http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware/reviews/default.asp After reading all, spend some time at the forum there..... you'd be more than amazed at the level of owners forthright opinions on almost all useable modem/router combinations for UK providers.
