Re: [SLE] Remote X Sessions - kNX feedback
I use PuTTy to create an SSH tunnel and once I login to SSH I run vncserver. All I had to do to get VNC to show my X-Desktop was edit the xstartup script in ~/.vnc and change the last line from tdm to /opt/kde3/startkde. Now, when I connect from WinXP with vncviewer
Anders,
I hope the Linux community (well the pro's that know how to code
professionaly/commercially) start looking towards implementing something
like CE.NET for thin clients (we call them NC's here in SA - network
computers). I setup LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) on a Compaq / HP
t5500 thin client last week and I was VERY impressed by the functionality.
I lost the job however (and the chance to get Linux into our business) as
the thin client relied on the network and the SuSE server with each boot to
get/download and initialise its OS - unlike CE.NET which is flashed into
the flash RAM of the NC and always avaliable - I do this via ftp or
parallel cable.
I need something like this with Linux in order to get Linux in to our
company in a big way.
If I could get this sort of functionality from kNX in the future -and after
reading the link you posted - thanks - it looks like they are heading in
the right direction.
So then.. My wish - a thin client / NC operating system to replace CE.NET
and that has all my favourite Linux tools built in like SSH, XWin, XDMCP,
Rdesktop and Mozilla or Netscape.
I know there are commercial NC's and versions avaliable, but I need to do
it all inhouse, for no cost in order to get some attention.
Thanks for the kNX link - I will be following this from now on.
Any comments? Cheers,

the SSH tunnel, it loads my SuSE X-Desktop.
*shudder* I can't wait until kNX and FreeNX get to a workable state http://dot.kde.org/1088363665/ -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Well, the network boot thing isn't something that is inherent in the linux terminal server idea. That's just a way to get the system onto machines that have no non-volatile storage at all. It's perfectly possible to set up a terminal server with a minimal harddrive (or like your systems, flash RAM). Neoware does this http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/neoware/index.html for example. And you can probably customize your own installation with one of the embedded linuxes http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/reports/1266/7/ Naturally, I have no idea if there is driver support for the hardware you're using, but if there is it shouldn't be impossible to put something together
